CGPA Calculator for Nigeria
Calculate your CGPA using Nigeria's 5-point grading system. Course unit / credit unit weighting as used by UNILAG, ABU, OAU, UNIBEN and other Nigerian universities.
Most Nigerian universities use a credit-weighted GPA framework, commonly on a 5.00 scale, but variations exist (including different pass marks by level/programme and alternative scale implementations).
What is commonly used
- GPA and CGPA are widely used in universities that run a "course unit / credit unit" system. UNILAG describes instruction "by courses, quantified into course units" and discusses grading, GPA and academic standing.
- Credit-weighting is standard: grade points are tied to each course and weighted by the course's credit units. ABU's handbook states semester grades are calculated as GPA using letter grades A–F mapped to grade points (5–0).
Common grading scale(s)
- 5.00 scale (very common): OAU: "CGPA obtainable ranges from 0 to 5." ABU: GPA based on A–F equivalent to 5,4,3,2,1,0 grade points.
- Variation exists: UNIBEN publishes different grading-system statements across cohorts (e.g., 5-point and 6-point systems on the same regulations page).
- Credits terminology: "Credit units", "course units", and "units"—UNILAG uses "course units".
- Typical pass mark: 40% is widely used, but varies by level/faculty/programme. OAU: 40% for Parts I–II (exceptions e.g. nursing), 50% for Parts III–V. UNIBEN: 40–44 = E (pass), 0–39 = F (fail).
- Rounding: Institution-specific; many do not prominently publish rounding rules.
- Grades awarded: Courses assessed with letter grades (A, B, C, D, E, F) tied to percentage marks. OAU and UNIBEN publish these mappings.
- Convert to grade points: Each letter maps to a numeric GP. ABU: A–F = 5,4,3,2,1,0 for classified degrees. Exact band cutoffs can differ by institution.
- Credit weighting: Each course has a unit value. Contribution to GPA depends on units. UNILAG describes courses quantified into course units.
- Compute quality points and semester GPA: Course Point = Course Units × Grade Point. Sum all course points; divide by total units. ABU and OAU confirm this approach.
- Compute CGPA: Cumulative across semesters—total accumulated course points ÷ total accumulated units. OAU: CGPA ranges 0 to 5.
GPA vs CGPA
Semester GPA reflects one semester; CGPA aggregates performance across all semesters in the programme.

| B | 60–69 |
| C | 50–59 |
| D | 45–49 |
| E | 40–44 |

| Course | Units | Score | Grade | GP | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GST 101 | 2 | 72% | A | 5 | 10 |
| MTH 101 | 3 | 63% | B | 4 | 12 |
| CSC 101 | 3 | 58% | C | 3 | 9 |
| PHY 101 | 3 | 47% | D | 2 | 6 |
| CHM 101 | 2 | 41% | E | 1 | 2 |
| Total | - | 39 | |||
Total points = 39 ÷ Total units = 13
Semester GPA = 39 ÷ 13 = 3.00
If first semester: CGPA = GPA = 3.00. In later semesters, CGPA = cumulative points ÷ cumulative units.
- Semester GPA: Performance for a single semester under the course unit system.
- CGPA: Aggregated performance across semesters; OAU states CGPA ranges 0–5.
- Degree classification: Many universities classify degrees (First Class, Second Class Upper/Lower, etc.) using CGPA thresholds—published in each institution's regulations.
- Some programmes may use "weighted average" or "average mark" (especially postgraduate); undergraduate classification commonly references CGPA bands.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
Scale: Course unit system; CGPA 0–5
Pass mark differs by parts/levels (e.g., Parts I–II vs III–V); grade bands published in regulations.
University of Benin (UNIBEN)

Handbook describes continuous assessment contribution and GPA computation framework.
Covenant University
Scale: CGPA on 5.0 scale
Policies discuss CGPA thresholds for academic standing/progression; PG handbook shows 5.0 point scale.
There is no single universal Nigeria CGPA → overseas GPA conversion. Universities abroad typically use degree classification (e.g., Second Class Upper) and/or minimum CGPA thresholds on the Nigerian scale (often 5.0, sometimes 4.0 or 7.0).
- University of Edinburgh: Nigeria applicants normally expected to have specified GPA out of 5.0, or 60%+, or Upper Second Class or above.
- University of Nottingham: Maps UK 2:1 and 2:2 to Nigerian CGPA bands (Max CGPA: 5.0).
- University of Sheffield: Lists Nigerian equivalencies for degree class plus CGPA thresholds (4.0/5.0/7.0 scales).
- Queen's University Belfast: CGPA thresholds for Nigerian degrees for 2:1 and 2:2 equivalence.
Requirements may vary by course and awarding institution. For UK jobs/studies/professional registration, UK ENIC provides a Statement of Comparability. For UK visas, Ecctis/ENIC services may be required.
