Grading System Overview (Rwanda)
5.0 scale (UR standard) or 4.0 scale (private universities); CAMS framework

Rwanda's higher education uses the Credit Accumulation and Modular Scheme (CAMS), governed by the Rwandan National Qualifications Framework (RNQF) under the Higher Education Council (HEC).

The University of Rwanda (UR), the national benchmark, uses a 5.0 GPA scale. Private institutions like AUCA may use a 4.0 scale. One credit = 10 notional hours of learning. A standard academic year = 120 credits. A 4-year Bachelor's with Honours = 480 credits.

Pass mark is 50%. Assessment includes Continuous Assessment (40-50%) and Final Examination (50-60%). CGPA determines degree classification: First Class Honours (4.40-5.00), Second Class Upper (3.50-4.39), Second Class Lower (2.40-3.49), Pass (2.00-2.39).

Key Definitions
Understanding Rwandan terminology
CAMS: Credit Accumulation and Modular Scheme — Rwanda's modular learning framework.
Credit: Represents 10 notional hours of learning. 120 credits = 1 academic year.
Module: A unit of study with assigned credits, assessment, and grade.
Grade Point: Numeric value assigned to percentage performance in a module.
CGPA: Cumulative Grade Point Average — the overall average across all credits of the program.
Sessionnal GPA: The average calculated at the end of each academic year (after 120 credits).
Honours: Degree classification awarded upon graduation (First Class, Second Upper, etc.).
Step-by-Step GPA / CGPA Calculation
University of Rwanda method (5.0 scale)
  1. Percentage to Grade: Each module's total mark (Continuous + Exam) is converted to a letter grade: A (80-100%), B (70-79%), C (60-69%), D (50-59%), F (0-49%).
  2. Grade to Grade Points (5.0 scale): A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0, D=2.0, F=0.0.
  3. Credit Weighting: Grade Points Earned = Grade Point × Credits for that module.
  4. Total Credits: Sum of all credits attempted.
  5. Total Grade Points: Sum of all Grade Points Earned.
  6. GPA / CGPA: GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credits. Sessionnal GPA for one year; CGPA for entire program.
  7. Classification: CGPA determines Honours classification at graduation (480 credits for 4-year degree).
Formula: CGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / Σ(Total Credits)

Special Rules & Retakes
Supplementary exams and compensation
Supplementary Exams:

Students who fail a module (40-49%) may sit for a supplementary exam. If successful, the grade is typically capped at 50% (Grade D, 2.0 grade points). This limits the GPA impact but clears the failure.

Compensation:

Under CAMS, limited "compensation" may occur if a student narrowly fails a module but has a strong overall average. Rules vary by faculty—check with your department.

Retakes:

A module with Grade F (below 50%) remains on the transcript with 0.0 grade points until retaken and passed. The new grade replaces the old one in GPA calculation.

Common Mistake:

Forgetting that Rwandan degrees are credit-weighted. A failure in a 20-credit module is twice as damaging as a failure in a 10-credit module. Prioritize modules with the highest credit volume.

International Interpretation
How Rwandan grades are viewed abroad
USA/Canada:

Evaluators like WES and ECE typically convert Rwanda's 80%+ (Excellent/A) to a US 4.0 GPA. A Rwandan "Pass" (50%, Grade D) is often equated to a US "C" (2.0).

United Kingdom:

A Rwandan "First Class Honours" (CGPA 4.40+) is equivalent to a UK 1st Class degree. A CGPA of 3.50+ (Upper Division) is a UK 2:1.

Bologna Process (Europe):

Rwanda's 120-credit yearly system is designed to align with the European ECTS framework. However, the conversion is typically 2:1 — 60 ECTS = 120 Rwandan Credits. So 1 ECTS ≈ 2 Rwandan credits.
