How these GPAs differ from your college GPA
Your college calculates GPA under its own policies. AADSAS, VMCAS and NursingCAS instead recalculate your GPA from the courses you enter and verify against your transcripts, using rules published in their applicant help centers:
- One grade chart for everyone: A+ and A are both 4.0, with AB (3.5), BC (2.5) and CD (1.5) between the usual steps and D- at 0.7.
- Every grade for a repeated course counts. Grade forgiveness and replacement are ignored.
- Non-graded credit, such as AP or pass/fail, is left out, and WF counts as F.
- Courses from every college you list are included, not only the one awarding your degree.
EngineeringCAS and BusinessCAS work differently: you report a GPA for each school and level, converting it to a 4.0 scale in semester hours when your transcript uses letter grades or quarter hours.
Overall, science and non-science GPA
Your overall GPA counts every graded course. A science GPA counts only courses in the service's science category, and a non-science GPA is everything else. Each service draws that line differently:

Quarter hours vs semester hours
All five services work in semester hours. Quarter hours are converted at 1 quarter hour = 0.667 semester hours, roughly two thirds, before any GPA is calculated:
- 6 quarter hours x 0.667 = 4.0 semester hours (4.002 before rounding)
- An A in that course: 4.0 x 4 = 16.0 quality points
- Add a 3 semester hour B: 3.0 x 3 = 9.0 quality points
- GPA: (16.0 + 9.0) / 7 = 3.57
