Who we built this for

Students at any level

From first-year undergraduates checking their results after a tough semester to final-year students calculating whether they will graduate with the classification they need — SmartCGPA is designed to make grade math transparent and easy to verify without specialist knowledge.

International and transfer students

Students studying abroad, transferring between institutions, or applying to programs in another country often need to convert their GPA to a different scale. Our scale converter and WES GPA calculator are built specifically for this use case.

Students planning ahead

Use it before results are published to run scenarios: "If I get a B in this course and an A in that one, what will my cumulative GPA be?" The GPA Planner lets you model different outcomes and set a realistic target for next semester.

Students applying for scholarships or graduate programs

Many scholarships and graduate applications require a GPA on a specific scale. Our tools let you convert your current GPA to whatever scale the application form asks for, with a clear audit trail you can explain if asked.

How we built SmartCGPA

Building a GPA calculator sounds simple until you start mapping the world's grading systems. Different countries use different scales, different letter grades, different credit systems, and different classification names. Some systems are descending (Germany's 1.0 is perfect; 5.0 is failing). Some use degree classifications without numerical GPAs at all (UK First, 2:1, 2:2, Third). Some institutions publish their own grade maps that differ from the national standard.

We researched official grading documentation from universities, ministries of education, and credential evaluation services across 106+ countries. Every scale in the system is tied to a source we can point to. Where official sources disagree or are ambiguous, we document the discrepancy and default to the most widely used interpretation. The Calculation Methodology page explains every formula, rounding rule, and mapping choice in full.

All calculators are client-side only. There is no backend, no database, and no user accounts. This is deliberate: it keeps the site fast, keeps your data private, and means the tools continue to work even without a network connection once the page has loaded.

Transparency note

Our formulas are documented openly on the Calculation Methodology page. If you spot an error in a grade mapping or formula, please let us know. We fix confirmed errors as quickly as possible.

Our Mission

SmartCGPA was created with a simple goal: to give every student in the world access to accurate, transparent academic performance tools — for free, without a sign-up, and without complexity getting in the way.

Grading systems are surprisingly fragmented. A student in Nigeria calculates GPA on a 5.0 scale. A student in India uses a 10-point CGPA. A student in Germany works with a descending 1.0–5.0 scale where lower is better. A UK graduate earns a First, 2:1, or Third — not a number at all. And a US student applying abroad needs to convert their 4.0 GPA into something a foreign admissions office can interpret. There was no single, reliable, student-friendly place to handle all of this. SmartCGPA fills that gap.

We believe academic planning should not require a spreadsheet degree. When you can see the formula, trust the numbers, and get an answer in seconds — you spend less time anxious about your GPA and more time working on the things that actually improve it. That is what this site is built to make possible.

Our Values

Accuracy First

Every calculator shows its work. The formula, the grade-to-point mapping, and the step-by-step breakdown are always visible so you can verify the result against your own handbook. We never round intermediate values — only the final result — to avoid compounding errors.

Privacy Focused

Your academic data is yours. All calculations run locally in your browser using JavaScript — nothing is ever sent to a server, stored in a database, or associated with your identity. You can confirm this yourself by watching the Network tab in browser dev tools while using any calculator.

Fast & Free

No account required, no paywall, no freemium tier. Every tool on this site is free to use indefinitely. We keep the experience fast by doing all computation on the client side — there are no API calls standing between you and your result.

Student Centered

Every design decision starts with one question: does this make life easier for a student trying to understand their grades? We keep interfaces minimal, add worked examples to every major tool, and write FAQs that answer real questions — not just obvious ones.

How SmartCGPA works
  1. Choose the right tool. Use the CGPA Calculator for weighted multi-course averages, the Semester GPA Calculator for a single term, the GPA Planner to set and track targets, or the Scale Converter to translate your GPA to another system.
  2. Enter your grades, credits, and grading scale. Select your scale (4.0, 5.0, 10.0, or custom), add each course with its letter grade and credit hours, and adjust the grade map if your institution uses non-standard point values.
  3. Get a transparent result with the formula visible. The calculator shows the quality points for each course and the final GPA with two decimal places. You can verify every step against your own calculation.

All processing happens in your browser. There are no server requests made during a calculation — your academic data stays on your device and is cleared the moment you close or refresh the page.

Example

Three courses on a 4.0 scale: A (4 credits) = 16 quality points, B (3 credits) = 9 quality points, C (2 credits) = 4 quality points. Total quality points: 29. Total credits: 9. CGPA = 29 ÷ 9 ≈ 3.22.
