Percentage to GPA Converter — Convert Any Percentage to 4.0 GPA

Convert your percentage grade to GPA instantly — supports US Standard (Plus-Minus), US Simple 10-Point, Indian percentage, UK undergraduate, and Australian grading systems, plus a reverse GPA to percentage converter and batch transcript mode.

The same percentage means very different things in different countries — a UK 70% is a First Class Honours degree while a US 70% is a C-. This converter handles each system correctly, not just a simple formula. For full GPA calculation see the Cumulative GPA Calculator or the College GPA Calculator.

US Percentage to GPA Conversion Table — Standard Plus-Minus Scale

The most widely used grade scale in US colleges and universities. Percentage-to-GPA cutoffs vary by institution — always verify with your course syllabus or registrar.

Percentage RangeLetter GradeGPA Points
97–100%A+4.0
93–96%A4.0
90–92%A-3.7
87–89%B+3.3

67–69%D+1.3
63–66%D1.0
60–62%D-0.7
Below 60%F0.0

These are the standard threshold cutoffs used by most US institutions. If your professor's syllabus states different cutoffs (e.g. A = 90–100 instead of 93–100) use those instead.

Which scale does my institution use?

Check your course syllabus — the grade scale is required to be stated in writing. If not listed, your institution's registrar or academic handbook will specify it. Many community colleges use the simple 10-point scale while most research universities use the plus-minus scale.

Indian Percentage to GPA — Converting Indian Marks for US Applications

Indian students are one of the largest groups applying to US graduate programs. Indian percentage conversion requires special handling because Indian universities grade on a strict scale where 75% is an excellent performance — equivalent to approximately 3.5–4.0 US GPA — not a C as it would be in the US.

CGPA to Percentage Formulas by Institution

No universal formula exists. Always use your university's specific formula. See the CGPA Calculator for full CGPA calculation.

UK Percentage to GPA — Converting UK Degree Grades

Why UK grades appear low

UK academic culture has historically resisted grade inflation. A score of 70% in the UK is roughly equivalent to a US score of 93–96% (A) in terms of what it represents relative to the student population. UK students applying to US graduate schools should describe their 2:1 informally as "equivalent to a strong B+/A- (approximately 3.5 US GPA)" — not simply as "65%."

Australian and International Percentage to GPA Conversion

Canadian Percentages

Canadian percentages are generally closer to US standards, though specific cutoffs vary by province and institution. Most Canadian universities use a similar A/B/C/D/F structure with A typically starting at 80–90% depending on the institution.

French, German, and Other Systems

French 0–20 scale: 10/20 (50%) is passing — French passing grades appear much lower than US passing. German 1–5 scale is inverted (1 = best). For applications with non-English transcripts always request an official credential evaluation.

Why You Cannot Simply Divide Your Percentage by 25 to Get GPA

The most common conversion mistake is dividing percentage by 25 (100% ÷ 25 = 4.0, so 75% ÷ 25 = 3.0). On the US standard scale 75% is a C (2.0 GPA) — not a B. Understanding why this matters prevents significant errors on applications.

Wrong: Divide by 25
GPA = percentage ÷ 25

75% ÷ 25 = 3.0 GPA

Overstates GPA by 1.0 point

Better: Linear Approximate
GPA = (pct − 60) ÷ 10

(75 − 60) ÷ 10 = 1.5 GPA

Closer but still approximate

Correct: Threshold Table
73–76% = C = 2.0 GPA

75% → C → 2.0 GPA

How institutions actually assign GPA

Why threshold conversion is the standard

Grades are awarded in ranges — 93–100% all earn A (4.0 GPA). A student who scores 93% and one who scores 100% contribute the same GPA points even though their percentages differ by 7 points. This means GPA is stepped, not continuous. It also explains why pushing from 89% to 90% (B+ to A-) adds 0.4 GPA points while pushing from 93% to 98% adds zero.

How to Use Percentage Grades When Calculating Your GPA

Many professors grade on percentage — here is how to convert to GPA for your semester calculation.

Step 1 — Check your course syllabus for the specific grade scale (most professors state this explicitly).
Step 2 — Convert each final course percentage to the letter grade and GPA points using your institution's scale.
Step 3 — Multiply GPA points by credit hours to get quality points for each course.
Step 4 — Divide total quality points by total credit hours to get your semester GPA.
Worked Example — 4 Courses, US Plus-Minus Scale
CoursePercentageLetter / GPACreditsQuality Points
Biology88%B+ / 3.339.9
English91%A- / 3.7311.1
History79%C+ / 2.336.9
Math95%A / 4.0312
Total1239.9

Semester GPA = 39.9 ÷ 12 = 3.325 (≈ 3.33). Use the Cumulative GPA Calculator or College GPA Calculator to include multiple semesters.
