Grading System Overview (Tanzania)
Standardized 5.0 GPA scale; credit-weighted with Honours classification

Tanzania's higher education system uses a standardized 5.0 GPA scale regulated by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU). This framework is utilized by all major institutions including UDSM, UDOM, and SUA.

Performance is assessed through Continuous Assessment (40%)—including tests, assignments, and seminars—and a Final University Examination (60%). Transcripts display course code, title, credit units, letter grade, and grade point.

Pass mark is 50% (Grade C / 2.0). Marks from 40-49% earn Grade C (2.0) but are considered marginal. Below 40% is an absolute fail. CGPA determines degree classification at graduation.

Key Definitions
Understanding Tanzanian terminology
Credit Units (CU): A measure of the time/workload of a course. Typical courses are 2-4 credit units.
Grade Point (GP): The numerical value assigned to a letter grade (e.g., A = 5, B+ = 4).
Quality Points (QP): The product of Grade Point and Credit Units (GP × CU).
Semester GPA: Performance for a single academic term.
Cumulative GPA (CGPA): The weighted average of all semesters completed to date.
Degree Classification: The final honours rank (First Class, Upper Second, etc.) printed on the degree certificate.
Academic Standing: Satisfactory (GPA ≥ 2.0), Probation (GPA < 2.0), or Discontinuation (permanent withdrawal).
Step-by-Step GPA / CGPA Calculation
Standard Tanzanian method (TCU framework)
  1. Determine Grade Points: Assign the point value to the letter grade earned in each course (A=5, B+=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0).
  2. Calculate Quality Points: Multiply the Grade Point by the Credit Units for each individual course (GP × CU = QP).
  3. Sum Quality Points: Add all Quality Points for the semester to get Total Quality Points.
  4. Sum Credit Units: Add all Credit Units attempted in the semester to get Total Credit Units.
  5. Calculate GPA: Divide Total Quality Points by Total Credit Units (GPA = Total QP ÷ Total CU).
  6. Round Result: Round to one or two decimal places (e.g., 3.8 or 3.75).
  7. Determine Classification: CGPA at graduation determines Honours classification (First Class, Upper Second, etc.).
Formula: GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Units) / Σ(Total Credit Units)

Special Rules & Academic Policies
Supplementary exams, discontinuation, and attendance
Supplementary Examinations:

If a student fails a course (usually <50%), they must sit for a supplementary exam. Upon passing, the grade is recorded as a C (2.0 points) regardless of the actual score in the resit. This rule prevents students from achieving higher classifications through supplementary exams.

Discontinuation:

At many institutions (like UDSM), failing a certain number of credits or failing a supplementary exam for a core course may lead to discontinuation from studies. This is a permanent withdrawal from the program. Check your institution's specific discontinuation policy.

Minimum Attendance:

Students often must attend at least 75-80% of lectures to be eligible for final examinations. This is strictly enforced at most Tanzanian universities. Non-attendance can result in automatic failure.

Full-Time Load:

A typical semester consists of 12 to 18 credit units. The exact load depends on your program, year of study, and institution policy.

Assessment Structure:

Performance is generally determined by 40% Continuous Assessment (tests, assignments, seminars) and 60% Final University Examination. Both components are mandatory.

International Interpretation
How Tanzanian grades are viewed abroad
United Kingdom:

A Tanzanian First Class (CGPA 4.4+) is generally considered equivalent to a UK First Class (1st). An Upper Second Class (CGPA 3.5+) is equivalent to a UK 2:1.

United States:

Evaluators like WES often convert the 5.0 scale to a 4.0 scale. A Tanzanian B (55-59%) is typically viewed as a B- or C+ in the US system. A Tanzanian First Class may convert to around 3.5-4.0 on the US scale.

East African Community (EAC) / SADC:

Tanzania has adopted regional frameworks for credit transfer, making its credits highly compatible within the East African Community and Southern African Development Community.
