CGPA Calculator for South Africa
Calculate your weighted average using South Africa's percentage-based, credit-weighted system. Used by UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch and other universities. Degree classification by percentage thresholds.
South African universities generally do NOT use GPA/CGPA as the primary metric. They use:
- Course marks in percentages (0–100)
- Credit-weighted averages ("weighted average" or "final average")
- Degree classification (Pass, Merit, Distinction) from percentage thresholds
- Credits: NQF credits (1 credit ≈ 10 notional hours)
- Pass mark: 50% (institutional rules apply)
- Rounding: Usually 1–2 decimal places
- Marks awarded: Each course graded as percentage (0–100).
- Credit weighting: Each course has NQF credit value.
- Weighted Mark: Mark × Credits per course.
- Final Average: Σ(Mark × Credit) ÷ Σ(Credit).
- Year vs programme average: Year average for progression; final programme average for degree classification.
| % | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 75–100 | Distinction / First-class |
| 70–74 | Upper second-class |
| 60–69 | Lower second-class |
| 50–59 | Pass |
| Below 50 | Fail |
UCT and Wits define distinction at ≥75%.
| Course | Credits | Mark (%) | Weighted Mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economics I | 16 | 68 | 1088 |
| Mathematics I | 16 | 72 | 1152 |
| Statistics I | 12 | 65 | 780 |
| Academic Literacy | 8 | 75 | 600 |
| Total | - | 3620 | |
Final average = 3620 ÷ 52 = 69.62%
Upper second-class level (~69.6%), just below distinction (75%).
- Course mark: Percentage for one module.
- Weighted average: Credit-weighted percentage across courses.
- Year average: For progression.
- Final programme average: For graduation classification.
GPA and CGPA are not formally used on most transcripts.

South Africa does not use GPA, so conversion is case-by-case. Common: percentage-to-GPA mapping by receiving institution; band interpretation (e.g., 75% ≈ US 3.7–4.0); credential evaluation (WES) for US/Canada. UK ENIC assesses by percentage averages and institutional standing. Submit transcripts, grading scale, and faculty handbook excerpts.
