Icelandic Grade Calculator (0–10)

Calculate your weighted average on Iceland's 0–10 national scale. Higher is better: 10.0 is Excellent, 5.0 is the minimum pass at Bachelor's level, and 6.0 is often required for Master's courses. Fully ECTS-weighted as used at Icelandic universities.

Grading System Overview (Iceland)
0–10 decimal scale with ECTS credits

In Icelandic higher education, grades are reported on a 0–10 decimal scale that is fully integrated with the Bologna Process and the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The same system is used across all major universities, with 10.0 reserved for truly exceptional performance.

  • Credits (Einingar): 60 ECTS per academic year; each course lists its einingar on the syllabus.
  • Pass mark: 5.0/10.0 for Bachelor's level, commonly 6.0 for Master's.
  • Assessment structure: Continuous assessment (assignments, mid‑terms, group projects) plus a final exam (lokapróf), often worth 60–70% of the final grade.
  • Transcript: The official transcript (námsferill) shows course titles, ECTS credits and numerical grades.
How Grades and GPA Are Calculated
Meðaleinkunn = weighted average of passing grades

In individual courses, instructors combine points from assignments, projects, participation and the final exam to produce a decimal grade between 0.0 and 10.0. Some programs require a minimum grade on the lokapróf (e.g. 5.0) regardless of coursework.

The cumulative GPA, called meðaleinkunn, is an ECTS-weighted average of your numerical grades.

Meðaleinkunn = Σ(Grade × ECTS) ÷ Σ(ECTS)

Only passing grades (≥ 5.0 in Bachelor's, ≥ 6.0 in many Master's programmes) are normally used when computing the final degree GPA printed on the diploma or diploma supplement. Failed attempts remain in internal records.

  • Minimum pass (UG): 5.0/10.0.
  • Minimum pass (Grad): often 6.0/10.0.
  • Resits (Endurtökupróf): students who fail or were ill may sit a resit exam, usually in a later exam period or summer session.

This falls within the 7.0 – 7.9 band, which corresponds to Second Class (Upper) performance.

What Your Final Result Means
  • Meðaleinkunn: Your cumulative weighted GPA across all completed courses, usually shown with one or two decimals.
  • Diploma Supplement: An English-language document describing the Icelandic system, your programme structure, and your grades with ECTS context and, in some cases, cohort distributions.
  • Professional degrees: Some programmes (e.g. Law, Medicine) may still refer to traditional qualifying titles like kandídatspróf.
Variations by University
Same 0–10 scale, different local rules

All Icelandic universities use the 0–10 scale and ECTS credits, but they may set different internal rules for minimum exam marks, retake limits, and progression requirements.
