The Jamaican Grading System: GPA-Based Honours
Jamaica uses a GPA-based degree classification system, distinct from the UK's percentage-based approach. The main universities—UWI Mona, UTech, and NCU—use a 4.3 GPA scale where A+ (90-100%) earns the maximum 4.30 grade points. Your cumulative GPA determines your final degree classification.
Your GPA is calculated using a credit-weighted average of grade points.
The Formula
Example Calculation
If you have three courses: A (4.0) × 3 credits + B+ (3.3) × 3 credits + A- (3.7) × 4 credits:

How We Calculate Your Classification
Step 1: Calculate Year GPAs
For each year, calculate weighted GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / Σ(Credits).
Step 2: Apply Year Weightings
Final GPA = (Year 1 GPA × Year 1 weight) + (Year 2 GPA × Year 2 weight) + (Year 3 GPA × Year 3 weight). Common weightings are 0/40/60 or 0/30/70.
Step 3: Map to Classification
Your final cumulative GPA is mapped to First Class, 2:1, 2:2, Pass, or Fail using the classification thresholds above.
