WES GPA Calculator (Unofficial)

Estimate your WES (World Education Services) GPA conversion before applying to US or Canadian universities. This unofficial tool uses published WES methodologies — it is a planning aid, not a substitute for official evaluation.

Unofficial estimate only. Results should not be used on applications or shared as official credentials. Always obtain a formal WES evaluation ($100–200) before submitting university applications.

What is WES and Why Does It Matter?

World Education Services (WES) is a non-profit credential evaluation organization headquartered in New York and Toronto. Founded in 1974, WES evaluates the academic credentials of internationally educated individuals for employment and educational purposes.

When you apply to a US or Canadian university as an international student, the admissions committee needs a way to compare your grades to those of domestic applicants. A 3.8 CGPA from an Indian university, a First Class Honours from a UK university, and a 1.5 from a German university all represent similar academic achievement — but they look nothing alike on paper. WES translates all of these into a standardized US 4.0 GPA that schools can compare directly.

WES evaluations are required or strongly recommended by over 2,500 institutions across North America. The formal process involves mailing certified transcripts and paying an evaluation fee. This calculator lets you estimate your converted GPA immediately, so you can plan your applications before committing to the formal process.

Who Should Use This Calculator

Graduate School Applicants

Check if your international GPA meets the minimum threshold (typically 3.0) for US master's and PhD programs before applying.

Scholarship Researchers

Identify which merit scholarships you qualify for. Most require a GPA of 3.0, 3.3, or 3.5 on the US scale.

Transfer Students

Understand how your credits and grades will be evaluated when transferring from a foreign institution to a US college.

Canada Applicants

WES Canada evaluations are required for many Canadian university programs and immigration applications (Express Entry).

Pre-Application Planners

Determine whether your GPA is competitive before paying for official evaluation, saving time and money.

Employers & HR Teams

Quickly benchmark international candidate transcripts against US grading standards for hiring decisions.

Supported Grading Systems

The calculator covers the following international grading systems using WES-published conversion ranges.

India CGPA to US GPA Conversion

India is the largest source of international graduate students in the US. The 10-point CGPA scale used by most Indian universities (CBCS system) converts as follows under WES methodology.

UK Honours to US GPA Conversion

UK degrees are classified rather than scored on a numerical GPA. WES maps UK honours classifications to the US 4.0 scale as follows.

How WES Calculates Your GPA

1

Document Collection

WES requests official transcripts directly from your institution. You must register and pay the evaluation fee on the WES website, then have your school send transcripts in sealed envelopes.

2

Grade Conversion

Each course grade is converted to a US letter grade using WES's country-specific conversion tables. An 8.5 CGPA from India does not become 8.5/10 × 4.0 = 3.4. WES applies institution-level adjustments based on their research into each country's grading practices.

3

Credit Counting

Credit hours, credit units, or semester hours are standardized. A 3-credit-hour course in the US, a 6-ECTS course in Europe, and a 4-unit course from India may all be treated as equivalent credits depending on contact hours.

4

GPA Calculation

The US GPA is computed using the standard weighted quality-points formula: sum of (grade points × credits) divided by total credits. The result is reported on a 4.0 scale.

5

Report Delivery

WES delivers a PDF report to you and can send verified reports directly to up to three institutions. Additional institution reports can be ordered at extra cost.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming a linear conversion (CGPA/10 × 4.0)

A simple multiply-by-0.4 formula is widely shared online but is not how WES works. WES uses fixed grade bands, not proportional scaling. An 8.0/10 does not automatically become 3.2.

Ignoring institution tier differences

WES assigns different conversion ranges depending on whether your university is an IIT, central university, or state-affiliated college. Elite institution grades often convert higher.

Ordering WES evaluation for the wrong credential type

WES offers course-by-course and document-by-document evaluations. Graduate programs almost always require the course-by-course report, which is more detailed and costs more. Ordering the wrong type can delay your application.

Not budgeting enough time

The most common mistake is starting too late. Between requesting transcripts from your institution, international shipping, and WES processing time, allow at least 4–6 weeks before your application deadline.
