Albanian Grade Calculator

Calculate your weighted average using Albania's 1–10 national grading scale. Higher is better — 10 (Shkëlqyeshëm) is Excellent, 5 is the minimum pass (Kalueshëm). ECTS credit-weighted as used by Albanian universities in the Bologna system.

Grading System Overview (Albania)
1–10 national scale fully integrated with ECTS

In the Republic of Albania, higher education is fully integrated into the Bologna Process. Universities use a 1–10 numerical scale alongside the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). While public universities focus on the national 10-point weighted average, some private institutions also provide a US-style 4.0 GPA for international transparency.

  • Pass mark: Grade 5/10 (Kalueshëm, Passable).
  • Credits: Kredite (ECTS). 1 academic year = 60 ECTS credits.
  • Grading outputs: Transcripts list numerical grades (5–10) with descriptive equivalents (Shkëlqyeshëm, Shumë mirë, etc.) and ECTS credits.
  • Assessment structure: Continuous assessment (Vlerësimi i Vazhdueshëm) plus a final exam. Mid-terms, quizzes and assignments typically carry a significant share of the total points.
  • Diploma Supplement: Issued in Albanian and English, detailing courses, ECTS credits, grades and degree structure.
How Grades Are Calculated
Weighted arithmetic mean (Mesatarja e Pondëruar)

Albanian professors often use a 0–100 point system for individual tasks (quizzes, mid-terms, projects, final exam), but the final course grade is always recorded as an integer from 1 to 10.

Typical internal mapping (example – varies slightly by institution):

  • 10 → 96–100%
  • 9 → 86–95%
  • 8 → 76–85%
  • 7 → 66–75%
  • 6 → 56–65%
  • 5 → 41–55% (minimum pass)
  • 1–4 → below pass threshold (fail)

For the cumulative result, Albania uses the weighted arithmetic mean where ECTS credits act as weights.

Mesatarja e pondëruar = Σ(Grade × ECTS) / Σ(ECTS)

Only passing grades (5–10) are typically included in the final calculated average on the graduation diploma. Failing grades (1–4) are recorded internally but often excluded from the official mesatare.

Special rules:

  • Minimum pass (5): Any grade below 5 is fail (Mbetës).
  • Retakes: Students can retake failed courses; for retaken passes, the highest or most recent grade is typically used in the final average, depending on the institution.

What the Final Result Means
Key terms in the Albanian system
  • Mesatarja e Pondëruar: The final weighted average across all years of study.
  • Diploma Supplement: Issued free of charge in Albanian and English, explaining the degree, grading scale, and each course with ECTS credits.
  • Medalja e Artë (Gold Medal): A prestigious honor awarded by the Ministry of Education to students with a near-perfect or perfect average (often 9.5–10).
Variations by University
National 1–10 scale with institutional nuances

While the 1–10 scale is national, private universities often have internal point-to-GPA systems and may report both a 10-point average and a 4.0 GPA on transcripts.
