North Macedonian Grade Calculator

Calculate your weighted average using North Macedonia's 6–10 national grading scale. Higher is better — 10 (Odlicen) is Outstanding, 6 is the minimum pass (51+ points). ECTS credit-weighted as used by Macedonian universities in the Bologna system.

Grading System Overview (North Macedonia)
5–10 national scale with ECTS credits and 0–100 point backbone

North Macedonia has been part of the Bologna Process since 2003. Higher education uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)and a 5–10 numerical grading scale, where 6 is the minimum passing grade.

  • Pass mark: Grade 6 (Dovolen), usually requiring at least 51 points (some faculties require 60).
  • Grades used: 5–10 numerically, with 6–10 as passing grades and 5 as fail.
  • Credits: EKTS krediti (ECTS credits). 1 year = 60 ECTS; Bachelor = 180–240 ECTS.
  • Outputs: Official transcripts list the course name, numerical grade (6–10), and ECTS credits.
  • Prosječna ocena: The GPA – an ECTS-weighted average of all passing grades.
  • Ispitna sesija: Exam periods (Winter, June, September) when most exams and resits take place.
How Grades Are Calculated
0–100 points → 6–10 grade → ECTS-weighted GPA

Final grades are determined by the total number of points earned in a course, usually on a 0–100 scale.

  • Continuous assessment (kolokviumi, seminars, assignments, attendance, participation).
  • Final exam (written and/or oral).

Once the total points are known, they are converted to a numerical grade (6–10) using the official points-to-grade scale. The cumulative GPA (prosječna ocena) is then calculated as a weighted average using ECTS credits:

Prosječna ocena = Σ(Grade × ECTS) / Σ(ECTS)

Only passing grades (6–10) are included in the final GPA on the diploma. Failing grades (5) are usually not counted in the official average, although they remain in university records.

Special rules:

  • Minimum pass (6): generally ≥51 points (sometimes 60).
  • Failing grade (5): 0–50 points. Students must retake the exam until they reach 6 or higher.
  • Resits: Multiple exam sessions (Winter, June, September). If a passed course is retaken, the new grade usually replaces the old one.

What the Final Result Means
Key terms in the North Macedonian system
  • Prosječna ocena (GPA): The overall ECTS-weighted average of all passing grades (6–10).
  • Diploma Supplement: A bilingual document (Macedonian and English) given automatically and free of charge, listing all courses, ECTS credits and grades, plus a description of the national system.
  • Degree classification: North Macedonia does not use Latin honors. Instead, a high GPA (e.g. above 9.0) is often required for state-funded Master’s or PhD positions.
Variations by University
Same 5–10 scale, slight threshold differences

The 5–10 scale is mandated by the Law on Higher Education, but point thresholds and continuous assessment rules can vary slightly between universities and faculties.
