Croatian Grade Calculator

Calculate your weighted average using Croatia's 1–5 national grading scale. Higher is better — 5 (Izvrstan) is Excellent, 2 (Dovoljan) is the minimum pass. ECTS credit-weighted as used by Croatian universities in the Bologna system.

Grading System Overview (Croatia)
1–5 national numeric scale with ECTS weighting

Croatia's higher education system is fully integrated into the Bologna Process, using a national 1–5 numerical scale and the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). Academic performance is assessed through continuous monitoring and final examinations, and final degree classifications are typically based on the weighted arithmetic mean of all passing grades.

  • Pass mark: 2 / 5 (Dovoljan, Sufficient). Grade 1 (Nedovoljan) is failing.
  • Credits: ECTS bodovi (ECTS credits). A full academic year is typically 60 ECTS.
  • GPA (prosjek ocjena): Calculated as a weighted average of numerical grades (2–5) using ECTS credits as weights.
  • Assessment structure: Continuous assessment (mid-terms, quizzes, projects) plus a final exam. In many courses, enough points during the semester can exempt you from the full final.
  • Transcripts: The official transcript (Prijepis ocjena) lists each course, ECTS credits, numerical grade (2–5) and the final average.
How Grades Are Calculated
Weighted arithmetic mean (prosjek ocjena)

While students see the final grade on a 1–5 scale, many Croatian courses internally use a 0–100 point system. Points are accumulated from:

  • Attendance / Participation: 5–10%
  • Mid-terms (Kolokviji): 30–50%
  • Final exam: 40–60%

To calculate the cumulative result, Croatia uses the weighted arithmetic mean of grades using ECTS credits.

Prosjek ocjena = Σ(Grade × ECTS) / Σ(ECTS)

Only passing grades (2–5) are included. Failing grades (1) are excluded from the final GPA; students must pass the course first.

Special rules:

  • Failure (1): Failing grades are not included in GPA. You retake the exam until you receive 2 or higher.
  • Exam attempts: Students typically have up to four attempts per course. The fourth attempt is often a "Commission Exam" (Komisijski ispit) before a panel of professors.
  • ECTS threshold: To progress to the next year, students must collect a minimum number of ECTS (e.g. 42–60 ECTS, depending on the faculty).

What the Final Result Means
Key terms in the Croatian system
  • Prosjek ocjena: The cumulative weighted average of all passed courses (GPA).
  • Prijepis ocjena: The official transcript showing all passed exams and ECTS credits.
  • Diploma Supplement: An English-language document issued with the diploma explaining the Croatian system and the student's ECTS ranking.
  • Rector's Award: A prestigious honor given to students with the highest GPAs (often 4.5+ or 5.0) and outstanding achievements.
  • Kolokvij: A mid-term exam that lets you pass parts of the course during the semester and can reduce or replace the final exam workload.
Variations by University
Same 1–5 scale, different internal thresholds

While the 1–5 scale is national, internal point thresholds (0–100) and continuous assessment policies vary by university and faculty.

University of Zagreb

System: 1–5, ECTS-weighted

Largest Croatian university; strict use of national 1–5 scale. Grade 1 (fail) is not recorded on the final transcript.

University Website

University of Split

System: 1–5, ECTS-weighted

Heavy emphasis on continuous assessment and kolokviji (mid-terms).

University Website

University of Rijeka

System: 1–5, internal 0–100 points

Uses a 0–100 point system internally and converts to 1–5 and ECTS grades.

University Website

University of Osijek

System: 1–5, ECTS-weighted

Standard national scale with strong focus on mid-term tests.
