Grading System Overview (Ethiopia)
Standardized 4.0 GPA scale; credit-weighted with Honours classification

Ethiopian higher education uses a standardized 4.0 GPA scale overseen by the Education and Training Authority (ETA), formerly known as HERQA. All major public universities follow this system.

Performance is assessed through Continuous Assessment (50%)—including tests, assignments, and presentations—and a Final Examination (50%). Transcripts show course code, credit hours, letter grade, grade point, Semester GPA (SGPA), and Cumulative GPA (CGPA).

Pass mark is 50% (Grade C / 2.0) for undergraduate programs. Graduate programs typically require Grade B (3.0) to pass. CGPA determines degree classification at graduation.

Key Definitions
Understanding Ethiopian terminology
Credit Hour: A measure of workload, usually 3 or 4 per course.
Quality Points: Grade Point × Credit Hours = weighted contribution to GPA.
SGPA (Semester GPA): Performance for the current term.
CGPA (Cumulative GPA): Weighted average of all semesters.
Good Standing: Requires a CGPA of 2.00 or higher.
Academic Warning: Issued if SGPA falls below 2.00.
Probation: CGPA below 2.00 for a semester.
Dismissal: Typically occurs after two consecutive semesters on probation.
E.C. (Ethiopian Calendar): Ethiopian Calendar, approximately 7-8 years behind the Gregorian Calendar.
Step-by-Step GPA / CGPA Calculation
Standard Ethiopian method
  1. Raw Mark to Letter Grade: Each course's total mark (Continuous Assessment 50% + Final Exam 50%) is converted to a letter grade based on percentage ranges.
  2. Letter Grade to Grade Point: Each letter grade has a corresponding grade point on the 4.0 scale (e.g., A = 4.00, B+ = 3.50, C = 2.00).
  3. Calculate Quality Points: Quality Points = Grade Point × Credit Hours for each course.
  4. Sum Total Credit Hours: Add up all credit hours attempted in the semester or program.
  5. Sum Total Quality Points: Add up all quality points earned.
  6. Calculate GPA: GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours. Round to two decimal places.
  7. Determine Classification: CGPA at graduation determines Honours classification (First Class with Great Distinction, etc.).
Formula: GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credit Hours) / Σ(Total Credit Hours)

Special Grade Designations
Understanding non-standard grades
Fx (Re-exam Allowed):

A "near miss" grade for marks between 35-39%. Students can sit for a one-time re-examination. If passed, the grade is typically updated to D (1.00) or C (2.00) depending on university policy.

NG (No Grade):

Temporary mark when assessment is missing or incomplete. Must be resolved before degree conferral.

I (Incomplete):

Awarded for valid medical or emergency reasons. The student must complete the assessment quickly (usually within 2-4 weeks) or the grade converts to F.

W (Withdrawn):

Course formally dropped within the first 8 weeks of the semester. Does not affect GPA.

DO (Dropout):

Course abandoned without formal withdrawal. Counted as an F (0.00) and affects GPA negatively.

P/F (Pass/Fail):

No-credit courses are recorded as P (Pass) or F (Fail) and do not affect GPA calculations.

International Interpretation
How Ethiopian grades are viewed abroad
United States:

Highly compatible. An Ethiopian A (85%+) is viewed as a US 4.0 GPA. Because 50% is a "Satisfactory Pass" in Ethiopia, a 60% mark is often equated to a US B- (2.7).

United Kingdom:

A "First Class with Distinction" (CGPA 3.50+) is usually equated to a UK First Class (1st). A CGPA of 3.0 is considered a UK 2:1 equivalent.

Evaluation Caution:

Ensure credential evaluators account for the Ethiopian Calendar (E.C.) to avoid discrepancies in graduation dates. Always provide both E.C. and G.C. dates when applying internationally.
