Maltese Higher Education: MQF and Degree Classifications
Maltese higher education is influenced by the British system and governed by the Malta Qualifications Framework (MQF), aligned with the European Higher Education Area (Bologna Process). The grading system is rigorous: while classification names (First Class, 2:1, etc.) are familiar, the percentage boundaries and "Category" system are specific to Malta. University of Malta (UM) and MCAST may use slightly different internal rules, but the classification names are standard.
| MQF Level | Qualification | Typical ECTS | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 5 | Undergraduate Diploma / Higher Diploma | 60 – 120 ECTS | 1–2 years |
| Level 6 | Bachelor's Degree (Honours) | 180 – 240 ECTS | 3–4 years |
| Level 7 | Master's Degree / PG Diploma | 60 – 120 ECTS | 1–2 years |
| Level 8 | Doctoral Degree (PhD) | N/A | 3–4 years |
1 ECTS credit = 25 hours of total student workload. 60 ECTS = one full academic year.
Malta Honours Degree Classifications (Level 6)
| Classification | Abbreviation | Percentage Range | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Class Honours | 1st | 80% – 100% | Highest achievement. Stricter than UK (70%+). |
| Second Class Honours (Upper Division) | 2.1 | 70% – 79% | Very good; standard for many postgraduate and employers. |
| Second Class Honours (Lower Division) | 2.2 | 55% – 69% | Good/satisfactory. |
| Third Class Honours | 3rd | 45% – 54% | Pass with honours; lowest honours band. |
| Fail | F | Below 45% | Does not meet minimum requirements. |
Ordinary (General) degrees
For 3-year General degrees without Honours, Malta uses Categories: Category I (80%+), IIA (70–79%), IIB (55–69%), III (45–54%).
Postgraduate (Level 7) classifications
Pass with Distinction (80%+), Pass with Merit (70–79%), Pass (50–69%), Fail (below 50%). Pass mark for Masters is usually 50%. Dissertation often carries ~30 ECTS and may require 50–60% minimum for Merit/Distinction.
How the Final Grade is Calculated
In Malta, your final classification is almost always a Weighted Average Mark (WAM). Unlike some systems where only the final year counts, Malta typically includes all years with more weight on later years.
University of Malta example: Year 1 = 20%, Year 2 = 35%, Year 3 = 45%. So if you score 60% in Year 1, 70% in Year 2, and 80% in Year 3:
That would give Second Class Honours (Upper Division). Use the "Malta (20/35/45)" preset in the calculator above.
