Grading System Overview (Cameroon)
Bilingual LMD system: 0–20 (Francophone) / 4.0 GPA (Anglophone)

Cameroon operates a unique bilingual higher education system consisting of the Francophone subsystem (influenced by the French 0–20 scale) and the Anglophone subsystem (influenced by British/North American GPA models).

Since 2007, both subsystems have been unified under the LMD (Licence, Master, Doctorat) framework, which uses a credit-based system. 1 credit ≈ 25-30 hours of work.

Francophone institutions (e.g., Yaoundé I, Douala) primarily use the 0–20 scale. Transcripts often include a GPA equivalent (0–4.0) for international compatibility.

Anglophone institutions (e.g., Buea, Bamenda) primarily use a 4.0 GPA scale with letter grades (A–F).

Pass mark: 10.00 / 20.00 (50%) or Grade C (2.0 GPA). Assessment typically includes Continuous Assessment (CC - 30%–40%) and Final Exam (60%–70%).

Step-by-Step GPA / CGPA Calculation
How to calculate your weighted average or GPA
  1. Individual Course Grade: For each course, calculate total mark from Continuous Assessment (CC) and Exam:
    Mark = (CC × 30%) + (Exam × 70%)
  2. Grade Point Assignment: Each grade is assigned a Grade Point (GP) value based on the institution's scale (see tables below).
  3. Credit Weighting: Grade Points Earned = Grade Point × Credits for that course.
  4. Total Credits: Sum of all credits attempted.
  5. Total Grade Points: Sum of all Grade Points Earned.
  6. GPA / Weighted Average: GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credits.
  7. Degree Classification: The CGPA determines the class of degree (see Honours table below).
Formula: GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) / Σ(Total Credits)

Special Rules & Compensation
Resits, compensation, and capped grades
Compensation (Francophone):

A student can validate a semester if the weighted average is ≥ 10/20, even if a specific UE (Unité d'Enseignement) is below 10 (though usually not below 5 or 7).

Capped Resits:

In many faculties, if a student passes a course during the rattrapage (resit) session, the grade is capped at 10/20 or a C (2.0) on the transcript for GPA calculation purposes.

Conceded Pass:

A grade slightly below 10/20 (or D+ in Anglophone) that is validated because the student's overall average is high enough.

Common Mistake:

Scoring an "A" (80%+) is considered very difficult in Cameroonian public universities. A 12/20 (Mention Assez Bien) is equivalent to a "B" or 3.0 GPA and is considered good.

International Interpretation
How Cameroonian grades are viewed abroad
To US/Canada:

A 14/20 or a 3.3 GPA is considered competitive for Master's admissions.

To UK:

A 14/20 is often equated to a 2:1 (Upper Second Class).

WES/Credential Evaluation:

Mandatory for students moving between subsystems or abroad, as a 12/20 in a rigorous Francophone program is often harder to achieve than a 3.0 GPA in some private institutions.
