Latvian Grade Calculator (1–10)

Latvian higher education uses a standardized 10-point numerical grading scale (1.0–10.0) that is fully harmonized with the European Higher Education Area (Bologna Process) and uses ECTS credits for measuring workload and calculating weighted averages.
- Pass mark: Grade 4/10 (minimum 50%) is the typical threshold for undergraduate courses.
- Credits: Latvia uses Kredītpunkti (KP) locally, where 1 KP = 1.5 ECTS. Modern transcripts usually list ECTS directly (60 ECTS per academic year).
- Assessment structure: Courses typically combine Continuous Assessment (tests, assignments, seminars) and a Final Examination.
- GPA: The Weighted Average Grade is calculated using ECTS credits as weights.
- Ieskaitīts (Pass): Used for ungraded subjects (Pass/Fail); these grant credits but are excluded from the numerical average calculation.
Individual course grades are awarded based on a 100% point system, which is then mapped to the 1–10 scale:
- Grade 10: 95–100% (Izcili – With Distinction)
- Grade 9: 85–94% (Teicami – Excellent)
- Grade 8: 75–84% (Ļoti labi – Very Good)
- Grade 7: 65–74% (Labi – Good)
- Grade 6: 55–64% (Gandrīz labi – Almost Good)
- Grade 5: 50–54% (Viduvēji – Satisfactory)
- Grade 4: 50% (Gandrīz viduvēji – Almost Satisfactory, minimum pass)
- Grades 3–1: Below 50% (Neapmierinoši – Unsatisfactory, fail)
The cumulative GPA is calculated using a weighted arithmetic mean where ECTS credits act as weights.
Only passing grades (4–10) are typically included in the final diploma supplement. Failed grades (1–3) are recorded but do not grant credits and must usually be cleared before advancing to the next year.
Special rules:
- Failing grades (1–3): These are recorded but do not grant credits. In many programs, a failing grade must be cleared before the student can advance.
- Minimum pass threshold: While 4 is the national pass mark, some regulated professions (like Medicine at RSU) may set a higher threshold or treat a 4 as a "weak pass" requiring further assessment.
- Resits: Usually allowed twice; the first resit is typically free, while subsequent attempts may require an administrative fee.

These conversions are approximate and may vary by institution. A grade of 9 or 10 is rare and equivalent to an A (4.0) in the US system. Always check the specific requirements of your target university.

Outcome: Labi (Good) performance. The student passed the year, though Calculus II (4) was a borderline pass.

- Degree with Distinction: Some universities award honors for a GPA above 9.0 or 9.5, provided the final thesis is graded 10.
- Ieskaitīts: Appears for Pass/Fail subjects; these grant credits but are excluded from the numerical average calculation.
