Danish Grade Calculator (7-Point Scale)

Calculate your weighted average (Gennemsnit) using Denmark's 7-point scale (7-trins-skalaen). Only these grades exist: 12, 10, 7, 4, 02, 00, -3. Pass mark is 02. ECTS-weighted; grading is absolute (against learning objectives, not peers).

Grading System Overview (Denmark)
7-point scale (7-trins-skalaen) – absolute grading with ECTS

Danish university grading is governed by a unified national standard, the 7-point grading scale (7-trins-skalaen), introduced in 2007 to ensure compatibility with the European ECTS system. The scale is non-linear and designed to prevent grade inflation while maintaining absolute academic standards. Performance is assessed against specific learning objectives, not against other students.

  • Grades (discrete only): 12, 10, 7, 4, 02, 00, -3. No other values are used.
  • Pass mark: 02. Grades 00 and -3 are fail.
  • ECTS: One full year = 60 ECTS (approx. 1,650 student learning hours). 1 ECTS ≈ 27.5 hours at Danish institutions.
  • Gennemsnit (GPA): Weighted average = Σ(grade × ECTS) ÷ Σ(ECTS), usually shown with one decimal.
  • External examiner (censor): Many exams use an external examiner to ensure national standardization.
  • Resits: Usually 3 attempts per course. The original failing grade is replaced by the new passing grade on the final diploma.
How Grades and GPA Are Calculated
Weighted arithmetic mean and rounding rules

The Gennemsnit (GPA) is the weighted arithmetic mean: each grade is multiplied by its ECTS credits, summed, and divided by total ECTS.

Gennemsnit = Σ(Grade × ECTS) ÷ Σ(ECTS)

Rounding (ministerial rule): If a grade is an average of several partial grades (e.g. written + oral), it is rounded to the nearest grade on the 7-point scale. If exactly halfway, the grade is rounded up if the external examiner awarded the higher grade; if only internal examiners are present, round up to the nearest higher grade.

DTU part-exam rules: For courses with part-exams, (1) the weighted average of part-exams must be at least 02 without rounding up, and (2) no single partial grade can be below 00 (a -3 in any component usually results in a fail).

Failed courses (00 or -3) are replaced by the new grade when you pass a resit; only the passing grade appears on the final diploma, though all attempts may appear on a full transcript.

There is no official conversion. For UK: 12 ≈ 1st Class, 10 ≈ high 2:1. For USA: 10 is highly competitive for Master's (roughly 3.5–3.8 GPA equivalent).

GPA (Gennemsnit) = 250 ÷ 30 = 8.3

Performance is between "Good" (7) and "Very Good" (10).

What Your Final Result Means
  • GPA (Gennemsnit): The weighted average, usually displayed with one decimal point.
  • Diploma Supplement: An English document describing the Danish system and the student's ECTS grades.
  • Degree classification: Denmark does not use "Honors" or Cum Laude. A high GPA (e.g. 10+) is the main indicator of strong performance for graduate admission.
