Luxembourg Grade Calculator

Calculate your weighted average using Luxembourg's 0–20 grading system. Higher is better—20 is outstanding (virtually never awarded), 10 is the minimum pass. ECTS credit-weighted as used by the University of Luxembourg.

Grading System Overview (Luxembourg)
0–20 scale (higher is better) — aligned with Bologna Process and ECTS

Luxembourg universities use a 0 to 20 numeric grading scale, where higher numbers are better. The system is strictly aligned with the Bologna Process and the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), mirroring the French tradition with highly rigorous standards.

  • Pass mark: 10.00 out of 20.00. This is the minimum weighted average required to validate a module or semester.
  • Perfect scores are rare: A 20/20 is mathematically possible but virtually never awarded for final course averages. Grades above 16 are considered excellent.
  • Decimal precision: Grades are usually given to two decimal places (e.g., 12.73, 14.50).
  • Credits: ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer). Full academic year = 60 ECTS (30 per semester).
  • Capitalisation: Credits are "capitalized" (permanently earned) once a module is validated (≥10/20).
  • Resits: Rattrapages (resit sessions) are usually held in August/September. The new mark usually replaces the old one for calculation purposes.

Key concept: The system rewards depth and critical analysis rather than rote memorization. A 12/20 is a respectable "Satisfactory" result, and anything above 14 puts you in the top tier of your class.

How Grades Are Calculated
ECTS credit-weighted average (Moyenne Pondérée)
  1. Individual Course Grade (Note de l'UE): Each course unit is graded out of 20. The final grade is often a composite of continuous assessment and the final exam.
  2. Module Validation: A Module is validated if the student has undergone all forms of intended evaluation and obtained an overall weighted mark of at least 10/20.
  3. ECTS weighting: Multiply each grade by its ECTS credits.
  4. Sum and divide: Sum of (Grade × ECTS) ÷ Total ECTS = Final Average (Moyenne).
  5. Compensation: Within a module, a high grade in one subject can compensate for a lower grade in another, provided the weighted average for that module is ≥ 10.00.
  6. Failed Modules: If a module is not validated, the credits are not awarded, and the student may be required to retake the failed components.

Formula:

Moyenne = Σ(NoteUE × ECTSUE) / Σ(ECTSUE)

Semester Average = 382.00 ÷ 30 = 12.73 / 20

Degree Mention: Assez Bien (Satisfactory)

Note: The semester is validated because the weighted average is ≥ 10, despite the 9.50 in Statistics (assuming it was compensated within its module).

What "Final Result" Means
Key definitions in the Luxembourg system
  • Moyenne de l'UE: The grade for a single course unit.
  • Moyenne Pondérée: The overall weighted average of all modules.
  • Mention: The honorary title on the diploma (e.g., Diplôme de Bachelor, Mention: Bien).
  • Diploma Supplement: An official document in English and French/German that describes the nature, level, and content of the studies, including the ECTS grading distribution.
  • Capitalisation: Credits are "capitalized" (permanently earned) once a module is passed.
  • Validation: Successfully meeting all requirements for a course or degree stage.

The following conversions are typically used by international admission offices. Always verify with your target institution.

Luxembourg Grade (/20)UK ClassificationUS GPA Range

14 – 15.9Upper Second (2:1)A-/B+ (3.3-3.7)

10 – 11.9Third Class (3rd)C (2.0-2.9)
Below 10FailF (0.0-1.9)

Note: Evaluators like Scholaro map 14–20 to an "A" range (3.0-4.0 GPA) because the grading is much harsher than the American percentage system. A Luxembourgish 16/20 is generally considered a First Class (1st) equivalent. Direct 1:1 ECTS credit transferability means a 180 ECTS Bachelor's degree from Luxembourg is equivalent to a Bachelor's anywhere in the EU.
