Luxembourg Grade Calculator
Calculate your weighted average using Luxembourg's 0–20 grading system. Higher is better—20 is outstanding (virtually never awarded), 10 is the minimum pass. ECTS credit-weighted as used by the University of Luxembourg.
Luxembourg universities use a 0 to 20 numeric grading scale, where higher numbers are better. The system is strictly aligned with the Bologna Process and the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), mirroring the French tradition with highly rigorous standards.
- Pass mark: 10.00 out of 20.00. This is the minimum weighted average required to validate a module or semester.
- Perfect scores are rare: A 20/20 is mathematically possible but virtually never awarded for final course averages. Grades above 16 are considered excellent.
- Decimal precision: Grades are usually given to two decimal places (e.g., 12.73, 14.50).
- Credits: ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer). Full academic year = 60 ECTS (30 per semester).
- Capitalisation: Credits are "capitalized" (permanently earned) once a module is validated (≥10/20).
- Resits: Rattrapages (resit sessions) are usually held in August/September. The new mark usually replaces the old one for calculation purposes.
Key concept: The system rewards depth and critical analysis rather than rote memorization. A 12/20 is a respectable "Satisfactory" result, and anything above 14 puts you in the top tier of your class.
- Individual Course Grade (Note de l'UE): Each course unit is graded out of 20. The final grade is often a composite of continuous assessment and the final exam.
- Module Validation: A Module is validated if the student has undergone all forms of intended evaluation and obtained an overall weighted mark of at least 10/20.
- ECTS weighting: Multiply each grade by its ECTS credits.
- Sum and divide: Sum of (Grade × ECTS) ÷ Total ECTS = Final Average (Moyenne).
- Compensation: Within a module, a high grade in one subject can compensate for a lower grade in another, provided the weighted average for that module is ≥ 10.00.
- Failed Modules: If a module is not validated, the credits are not awarded, and the student may be required to retake the failed components.
Formula:
| Mark / 20 | Qualitative Comment (Official) | English Equivalent | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18.0 – 20.0 | Excellent | Outstanding | Pass |
| 16.0 – 17.9 | Très Bien | Very Good | Pass |
| 14.0 – 15.9 | Bien | Good | Pass |
| 12.0 – 13.9 | Assez Bien | Satisfactory | Pass |
| 10.0 – 11.9 | Passable | Acceptable / Pass | Pass |
| 0.0 – 9.9 | Ajourné | Insufficient | Fail |
Note: The Mention (qualitative honor) is assigned based on the weighted average of marks and appears on the diploma (e.g., "Diplôme de Bachelor, Mention: Bien").
| ECTS Grade | Cohort Percentile | Description |
|---|---|---|
| A | Top 10% | Excellent |
| B | Next 25% | Very Good |
| C | Next 30% | Good |
| D | Next 25% | Satisfactory |
| E | Next 10% | Sufficient |
| F/FX | - | Fail |
Note: This is used for international transparency to show where a student ranks within their specific program cohort. Transcripts display the ECTS Grade (A–F statistical ranking), the numerical mark (/20), and the credits earned.
| Course | ECTS Credits | Grade (/20) | Weighted Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microeconomics | 6 | 14.50 | 87.00 |
| Mathematics | 6 | 11.00 | 66.00 |
| Business Law | 4 | 16.00 | 64.00 |
| Academic Writing | 4 | 15.00 | 60.00 |
| Statistics | 6 | 09.50 | 57.00 |
| History of Econ. | 4 | 12.00 | 48.00 |
| TOTAL | 30 | 382.00 | |
Semester Average = 382.00 ÷ 30 = 12.73 / 20
Degree Mention: Assez Bien (Satisfactory)
Note: The semester is validated because the weighted average is ≥ 10, despite the 9.50 in Statistics (assuming it was compensated within its module).
- Moyenne de l'UE: The grade for a single course unit.
- Moyenne Pondérée: The overall weighted average of all modules.
- Mention: The honorary title on the diploma (e.g., Diplôme de Bachelor, Mention: Bien).
- Diploma Supplement: An official document in English and French/German that describes the nature, level, and content of the studies, including the ECTS grading distribution.
- Capitalisation: Credits are "capitalized" (permanently earned) once a module is passed.
- Validation: Successfully meeting all requirements for a course or degree stage.
The University of Luxembourg is the only public university in the country, ensuring a high degree of national standardization.
| Institution | Scale | Pass Mark |
|---|---|---|
| University of Luxembourg | 0–20 | 10/20 |
| Lycées (BTS Programs) | 0–60 | 30/60 |
Note: Short-cycle vocational diplomas (BTS) often use the secondary school scale (0–60), where 30 is the pass mark.
The following conversions are typically used by international admission offices. Always verify with your target institution.
| Luxembourg Grade (/20) | UK Classification | US GPA Range |
|---|---|---|
| 16 – 20 | First Class (1st) | A range (3.0-4.0) |
| 14 – 15.9 | Upper Second (2:1) | A-/B+ (3.3-3.7) |
| 12 – 13.9 | Lower Second (2:2) | B (3.0-3.3) |
| 10 – 11.9 | Third Class (3rd) | C (2.0-2.9) |
| Below 10 | Fail | F (0.0-1.9) |
Note: Evaluators like Scholaro map 14–20 to an "A" range (3.0-4.0 GPA) because the grading is much harsher than the American percentage system. A Luxembourgish 16/20 is generally considered a First Class (1st) equivalent. Direct 1:1 ECTS credit transferability means a 180 ECTS Bachelor's degree from Luxembourg is equivalent to a Bachelor's anywhere in the EU.
