How to calculate CGPA in Pakistan
Pakistani universities weight every course by its credit hours, so a 4-credit course counts more than a 2-credit one.
- Find the grade points for each letter grade on your university's scale.
- Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours.
- Add up the results and divide by the total credit hours. That is your semester GPA.
- For CGPA, do the same across every semester: total grade points earned so far ÷ total credit hours so far.

Semester GPA = 48.32 ÷ 15 = 3.22. If your CGPA before this semester was 3.40 over 32 credit hours, your new CGPA is (3.40 × 32 + 48.32) ÷ 47 = 3.34. Both are rounded to 2 decimal places.

Semester GPA vs CGPA
Your semester GPA (sometimes called SGPA) covers the courses you took in one semester. Your CGPA (cumulative GPA) covers every semester so far and is the figure on your degree transcript.
CGPA is not a simple average of your semester GPAs, because semesters with more credit hours count for more. For example, 2.50 over 12 credit hours and 3.50 over 18 credit hours give a CGPA of 3.10, not 3.00.

Typical grading scale used by Pakistani universities
Pakistan has no single national grading scale. Most universities grade on 4.0, but the letters they use and the points for each letter differ. This is a typical 4.0 scale, so check your own university's grading policy before relying on a result.

HEC's semester system guidelines recommend marks bands for each letter grade and give each letter a range of grade points (for example, A covers 3.67 to 4.00 for 85% and above). They also recommend relative grading (grading on a curve) for classes of more than 20 students. Universities adopt these guidelines in different ways, so the same marks can earn different letters at different universities.

HEC CGPA to percentage equivalence
HEC recommends an equivalence table for converting CGPA to percentage rather than a formula. Each CGPA is given the lowest percentage of its band, so a CGPA of 3.00 equals 71%. Universities may differ, so if your transcript or university states its own equivalence, use that figure.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good CGPA in Pakistan?
There is no official label for a good CGPA. As reference points, HEC's semester system guidelines set 2.00 as the minimum CGPA to complete a BS degree and 2.50 for MS/MPhil. Universities, employers and scholarship programmes publish their own cut-offs, which are usually higher, so compare your CGPA with the requirement of the programme you want.
How do I calculate CGPA from percentage?
You need the letter grade for each course, not just an overall percentage. Use your university's marks bands to turn each course's marks into a letter grade, then enter the grades and credit hours in the calculator. An overall percentage on its own can't give an exact CGPA because universities use different bands.
What percentage is a 3.00 CGPA in Pakistan?
Under the equivalence table in HEC's semester system guidelines, a CGPA of 3.00 equals 71%, the lowest percentage of its band. Your university may apply its own equivalence, so check your transcript first.
How does CGPA affect admission and scholarships?
Many Masters programmes, scholarships and jobs list a minimum CGPA, often alongside entry tests or interviews. Meeting the minimum usually makes you eligible rather than guaranteeing selection, so check each programme's published criteria.
What happens to my CGPA if I repeat a course?
Policies differ between universities, so check your university's rules on repeating and improving courses. HEC's semester system guidelines say an undergraduate who repeats a course graded below C has both grades shown on the transcript, with only the better grade counted in the CGPA, but universities set their own limits. In the calculator, enter only the grade that counts.
