Understanding the Finnish University Grading System
Finland uses a numerical grading scale of 0 to 5 at all universities (yliopisto) and universities of applied sciences (ammattikorkeakoulu — AMK). The grades are: 5 — Erinomainen (Excellent), 4 — Kiitettävä (Very Good), 3 — Hyvä (Good), 2 — Tyydyttävä (Satisfactory), 1 — Välttävä (Adequate, minimum pass), and 0 — Hylätty (Fail). The scale uses whole integers at most institutions, although some universities permit half-point grades at their discretion. Finnish higher education follows the Study in Finland portal standards, and degrees are structured according to the Bologna Process throughout. The GPA Calculator can help contextualise Finnish grades alongside other international systems. See also our Studying in Europe Guide.
Finnish academic institutions maintain deliberately conservative grading standards. Grades of 5 are genuinely uncommon and represent truly outstanding academic work — they are not awarded routinely and a student achieving consistent 5s is performing at the very top of their cohort. A student with a consistent weighted average of 4 across their degree is performing at a high level and is well above the median at most Finnish universities. This grading culture means that Finnish grade averages should be interpreted with reference to Finnish norms rather than compared directly to more inflation-prone systems.
Finland has two types of higher education institution. Universities (yliopisto) are research-oriented institutions that award Bachelor's degrees (180 ECTS credits), Master's degrees (120 ECTS), and PhD degrees. Universities of applied sciences (ammattikorkeakoulu — AMK) are professionally oriented and award applied Bachelor's degrees (210–270 ECTS) and applied Master's degrees (60–90 ECTS). Both institution types use the same 0 to 5 grading scale. The distinction between the two types is relevant for international credential evaluation, as discussed in Section 3 below.
Finland also uses a pass/fail system for seminars, practical components, language courses, and some compulsory modules. These appear on transcripts as Hyväksytty (Pass) and Hylätty (Fail). Pass/fail courses are not included in the numerical GPA calculation in standard Finnish credential evaluation practice — they are noted but do not affect the weighted grade average. The ECTS credit system is used throughout Finnish higher education, following the Bologna Process reforms, and Finnish degree levels map directly to international qualification frameworks including the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).
Finnish Grade Scale — Full Reference Table
A comprehensive reference table for converting Finnish university grades to US GPA and ECTS equivalents. A weighted average is always more meaningful than a single course grade for international applications — use the CGPA Calculator or the Weighted Average Calculator tab above to compute your overall GPA.
| Finnish Grade | Finnish (FI) | English | ECTS | Performance Standard | US GPA | US Letter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Erinomainen | Excellent | A | Outstanding — top of cohort, genuinely uncommon | 4.0 | A+ |
| 4 | Kiitettävä | Very Good | B | Very good — above majority of cohort | 3.3–3.7 | A− to B+ |
| 3 | Hyvä | Good | C | Good — solid, average performance | 2.7–3.2 | B− to B |
| 2 | Tyydyttävä | Satisfactory | D | Satisfactory — below average, basic understanding | 2.3–2.6 | C to C+ |
| 1 | Välttävä | Adequate | E | Minimum pass — barely meets requirements | 2.0–2.2 | C− |
| 0 | Hylätty | Fail | F | Fail — does not meet minimum requirements | 0.0 | F |
Pass/fail courses (Hyväksytty/Hylätty) are not included in the numerical GPA calculation. Conversion ranges represent standard practice — official WES evaluations may vary slightly by institution and programme type.
Yliopisto vs AMK — How Finnish Institution Type Affects International Evaluation
Finnish universities (yliopisto) — including the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, University of Turku, University of Tampere (Tampere University), University of Oulu, University of Jyväskylä, and others — are research institutions whose degrees are broadly equivalent to research university degrees internationally. Their credentials are recognised without difficulty by WES and by US and UK graduate programmes, and Finnish yliopisto Bachelor's and Master's degrees are evaluated as direct equivalents to US Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
AMK (ammattikorkeakoulu) degrees are applied professional degrees awarded by universities of applied sciences. WES evaluates AMK Bachelor's degrees as equivalent to a US Bachelor's degree, but the applied nature of the qualification means some research-focused PhD programmes may prefer yliopisto credentials. AMK graduates applying to research graduate programmes are advised to address their qualification type directly in their statement of purpose and to obtain a full WES course-by-course evaluation rather than a document-by-document evaluation, to ensure the academic content of their programme is fully assessed.
Aalto University deserves particular mention. Formed in 2010 from the merger of Helsinki University of Technology (HUT/TKK), Helsinki School of Economics, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Aalto is Finland's leading technical and business university. It carries strong international name recognition in engineering, technology, business, and design — particularly among US engineering and business schools — and Aalto graduates with strong grade averages are regarded as competitive applicants at leading global graduate programmes.
How WES Converts Finnish Grades to US GPA
WES (World Education Services) evaluates Finnish credentials from both yliopisto and AMK institutions and uses conversion methodology consistent with this calculator. The WES GPA Calculator on SmartCGPA can help you estimate your WES-converted GPA before submitting a formal application. WES is widely accepted by US and Canadian graduate programmes as the standard credential evaluation authority for Finnish transcripts.
WES requires official transcripts sent directly from the Finnish institution — Finnish transcripts are called the opintorekisteriote (transcript of records) or tutkintotodistus (degree certificate) and must be sent from the university's registrar, study services office (opintotoimisto), or student records office. Finnish transcripts are commonly issued in both Finnish and English; the English version is preferred by WES, although a certified English translation of the Finnish version is also acceptable. Pass/fail courses (Hyväksytty/Hylätty) on the transcript are noted by WES but are not included in the numerical GPA calculation, consistent with standard Finnish academic practice.
WES standard processing typically takes four to seven weeks from receipt of all documents, with rush service available for an additional fee. The Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus) is the official Finnish authority on credential recognition and can provide guidance for Finnish graduates seeking international recognition of their qualifications. Students applying to US institutions should initiate the WES evaluation process at least two to three months before application deadlines to allow sufficient processing time.
Finnish Grades and US Graduate School Admissions
Most US graduate programmes require a minimum GPA equivalent of 3.0 on the US 4.0 scale. For Finnish students, this corresponds approximately to a weighted average of 3.0 to 3.3 on the 0 to 5 scale. Students with weighted averages below 3.0 on the Finnish scale should note that their US GPA equivalent will typically fall below 3.0, which may make competitive US graduate admissions challenging without other strong application components. The University Match Calculator and College Admission Chance Calculator can help assess your competitiveness for specific programmes.
Finnish students with a consistent weighted average of 4 and above from a recognised yliopisto are competitive for strong US graduate programmes. Aalto University graduates in particular are well-regarded by US engineering and business programmes and carry strong name recognition at leading American universities. The University of Helsinki, as Finland's leading comprehensive research university and the highest-ranked Finnish institution, is similarly well-recognised by US graduate admissions committees across disciplines.
English proficiency is a significant practical advantage for Finnish applicants. Finland consistently ranks among the highest non-English-speaking countries globally for English language ability, and many Finnish Master's programmes are taught entirely in English. This may enable TOEFL or IELTS waivers at US institutions with appropriate exemption policies for students whose degree was taught in English — students should confirm this directly with each programme. For programmes that require a test score, see the English Language Test Guide.
Finnish Grades for UK University Applications
UK universities typically convert Finnish grades using the following general equivalence: 5 = First Class Honours equivalent, 4 = Upper Second Class (2:1) equivalent, 3 = Lower Second Class (2:2) equivalent, 2 = Third Class equivalent. See the UK Grades vs US Grades guide for a detailed comparison of the UK and US grading systems.
Most UK Master's programmes require a minimum 2:1 equivalent for competitive entry, meaning Finnish students typically need a weighted grade average of 4 or above for strong consideration at UK postgraduate programmes. Russell Group universities and other leading UK institutions are increasingly familiar with Finnish credentials and generally use the equivalence table above. The UK University Grade Calculator can help you understand your specific classification equivalent.
Scholarships for Finnish Students Studying Abroad
The Fulbright Finland Foundation is the primary scholarship programme for Finnish students seeking to study in the USA. The Foundation administers the Fulbright Graduate Grant for Master's and PhD study in the US, the Fulbright-University of Helsinki Grant, and the Fulbright-Aalto University Grant — a university-specific award for Aalto graduates pursuing graduate study in the US. Fulbright grants typically cover tuition, living costs, travel, and health insurance. Competitive applicants typically have a Finnish grade average of 4 or above and demonstrated academic and professional achievement. Applications open approximately eighteen months before the intended study start date.
The Finnish Cultural Foundation (Suomen Kulttuurirahasto) is one of Finland's largest private funders of academic development and provides grants for Finnish students and researchers pursuing international study, research visits, and academic collaboration. The Foundation distributes grants annually across all disciplines and is a major source of funding for Finnish doctoral candidates pursuing international research experience. The Academy of Finland supports Finnish doctoral and postdoctoral researchers pursuing international collaborations, research visits, and fellowship programmes at foreign institutions, primarily for researchers already enrolled in Finnish doctoral programmes.
Government scholarship programmes administered by the Finnish National Agency for Education (formerly CIMO) support Finnish students pursuing study at partner universities in Europe and internationally. Nordic Council scholarships support intra-Nordic academic mobility for Finnish students pursuing study at other Nordic universities (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland). University-specific fellowships at US and UK institutions — particularly those with active Aalto University or University of Helsinki alumni networks — are also available and are worth investigating at each target institution. Most competitive scholarships require a minimum Finnish grade average of 4 or above. Use the Scholarship Eligibility Calculator to assess your eligibility for specific programmes.
