English Test Score Calculators

For students applying to universities abroad, visa applicants, and job seekers who need to prove English proficiency — these tools help you calculate scores, convert between test formats, and understand what your results mean.

English proficiency tests are standardized exams that measure your ability to read, write, listen, and speak in English at an academic or professional level. Universities, immigration authorities, and employers use these scores to verify that applicants can succeed in English-language environments. Different institutions and visa categories accept different tests, and minimum score requirements vary — making it essential to understand your score before you apply.

Which English Test Should I Take?

The best test depends on your destination, purpose, and timeline. Use this guide to find the right fit.

Applying to UK universities

IELTS or Cambridge

Most UK universities accept IELTS Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE). Cambridge qualifications have no expiry and may be preferred for prestigious courses. IELTS is more widely available for test bookings.

Applying to US universities

TOEFL or IELTS

TOEFL iBT is the most commonly required test at US institutions and is developed by ETS, which also administers SAT/GRE — making it highly trusted by US admissions offices. IELTS is now accepted by almost all US universities as a direct alternative.

Applying for a UK visa

IELTS UKVI

The UK Home Office requires the IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) version for student, work, and family visas. This is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) — standard IELTS Academic is not accepted for visa applications.

Need a quick or affordable test

Duolingo English Test

The DET can be taken at home in about an hour and costs significantly less than in-person tests. Results are available within 48 hours. Over 5,000 universities now accept it, though some elite programs still require IELTS or TOEFL specifically.

Healthcare professional

OET

The Occupational English Test (OET) is designed specifically for healthcare workers. It is accepted by medical regulators in the UK (GMC, NMC), Australia (AHPRA), New Zealand, and the UAE. The test uses healthcare-specific reading, listening, and writing scenarios.

Need workplace English proof

TOEIC

The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) is the global standard for workplace English. Over 14,000 companies in 160 countries use TOEIC scores for hiring and promotion decisions. It is not typically used for university admissions.
