Duolingo English Test Score Calculator

Understand your DET overall score, subscores, CEFR level, and what your result means for university admissions worldwide

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an adaptive online test taken at home in approximately one hour, with certified results in just 48 hours, at a cost of around USD $65 — significantly cheaper than IELTS or TOEFL. Once accepted mainly at US universities, the DET is now accepted at 5,000+ institutions across 150+ countries, including many highly selective programs. This calculator helps you understand your score on the DET's 10–160 scale: your CEFR level, performance descriptor, university admissions standing, and — if you enter your four subscores — a detailed breakdown of your Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production performance.

What Does Your Duolingo English Test Score Mean?

The DET uses a 10–160 score scale reported in increments of 5. The table below maps every score range to its CEFR level, performance label, and typical university admissions standing.

Understanding Your DET Subscores

Alongside the overall score, every DET result includes four subscores — each on the same 10–160 scale with the same CEFR mapping. Universities primarily evaluate the overall score, but subscores provide a richer profile and may be scrutinised for specific program types.

L

Literacy

Reading and writing at the word and sentence level — vocabulary knowledge, spelling, reading comprehension of shorter texts.

Why it matters: Critical for academic writing programs, law, and humanities. A low Literacy score with a high overall may concern admissions officers for essay-heavy programs.
C

Comprehension

Ability to understand spoken and written English — listening comprehension and reading comprehension of longer texts.

Why it matters: Important for lecture-heavy programs such as engineering, sciences, and business. Reflects ability to follow complex academic input.
C

Conversation

Ability to engage in spoken interaction — speaking fluency and interactive listening.

Why it matters: Relevant for programs with significant in-class discussion, presentations, or clinical interaction. Healthcare and education programs scrutinise this subscore.
P

Production

Ability to create spoken and written language — speaking production and writing production.

Why it matters: Important for any program requiring substantial written output or oral presentations. Reflects active language generation, not just comprehension.

Adaptive Challenge — Question Types

The 45-minute scored section uses an adaptive algorithm: question difficulty adjusts in real time based on your performance. Question types appear in varying order and include:

Read and SelectIdentify real English words from a list of real and invented wordsLiteracy, vocabulary breadth

Read, Then SpeakRead a prompt; give a 90-second spoken responseLiteracy, Conversation, Production
Write About the PhotoDescribe an image in writing (min 50 words, 1 min)Literacy, Production
Read, Then WriteRead a prompt; write a response (min 50 words, 5 min)Literacy, Production
Interactive ListeningListen to a dialogue; answer comprehension questionsComprehension, Conversation
Interactive ReadingRead a passage; answer comprehension questionsComprehension, Literacy

Video Interview (10 min — unscored)

Three open-ended questions on personal and academic topics. Responses are recorded (video and audio) and sent to universities alongside your score report. Does not affect the numerical score but is reviewed by admissions officers and can significantly influence admission decisions.

A strong, confident video interview can differentiate you beyond your score.

Score Certification

Every score undergoes an AI and human review process for integrity before certification. Scores are typically certified within 48 hours but may take up to 5 days if additional review is needed. Common flagging triggers include looking away from the screen repeatedly, background noise suggesting assistance, or another person appearing on camera. An invalidated test produces no certified score.

Where Is the Duolingo English Test Accepted?

As of 2024–2025, over 5,000 institutions in 150+ countries accept the DET. Acceptance is strongest at US, Canadian, and Australian universities. UK acceptance is growing but remains limited. The DET is not accepted for UK, Australian, or Canadian visa/immigration purposes.

  • + Video interview gives admissions officers qualitative insight beyond the number

How to Improve Your Duolingo English Test Score

DET-specific preparation matters — students who prepare only for IELTS or TOEFL often find DET question types unexpectedly challenging. Here are targeted tips by skill area.

Vocabulary and Word Recognition

Read and Select, Read and Complete

  • 1.Build a strong academic vocabulary — Read and Select directly tests real vs. invented words, so breadth matters
  • 2.Practice Read and Select with Duolingo's official free practice test to learn less common but real English words
  • 3.Read and Complete tests spelling accuracy in context — focus on common spelling patterns and academic vocabulary

Listening

Listen and Type, Repeat the Sentence, Interactive Listening

  • 1.Listen and Type requires perfect transcription — practice with clear academic audio then increase difficulty
  • 2.Repeat the Sentence is scored on pronunciation and accuracy — practice repeating sentences with correct stress and natural rhythm
  • 3.Train with university-level academic audio: TED-Ed, MIT OpenCourseWare, news podcasts

Speaking

Read Aloud, Answer Questions, Speak About the Photo, Read Then Speak

  • 1.DET speaking is AI-scored — focus on clarity, pronunciation, and fluency rather than accent
  • 2.Use all available time — responses that end early lose potential score; aim to fill the full time
  • 3.For Speak About the Photo: describe systematically (what you see → what is happening → contextual inference)
  • 4.Record yourself on practice tasks and listen for filler words, unnatural pauses, and word stress errors

Writing

Write About the Photo, Read Then Write

  • 1.Aim for well above the 50-word minimum — longer, well-organised responses score higher
  • 2.Demonstrate a range of vocabulary and sentence structures — avoid simple repetitive sentences
  • 3.For Read Then Write: engage directly with the prompt ideas rather than restating them — show critical thinking
  • 4.Proof-read for grammar and spelling — word-level errors affect your Literacy subscore directly

General DET Preparation Tips

  • 1.Use Duolingo's free official practice test — it is the most representative preparation resource available
  • 2.The adaptive format means getting early questions right matters more — start carefully and deliberately
  • 3.Ensure a quiet room, stable internet, working microphone and camera before sitting the test
  • 4.The AI proctoring checks for looking away from screen, other people in room, and background noise — ensure your environment is compliant
  • 5.You can retake after 21 days — one practice run to understand the format, then a serious attempt, is a viable low-cost strategy
