In the Republic of Niger, university grading is aligned with the LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorat) framework harmonized across Francophone Africa (CAMES and REESAO). The system centers on a 20-point numerical scale, with academic progress measured by the "capitalization" of credits.
Assessment is divided into semesters, each worth 30 credits. Students do not receive a GPA in the American sense; performance is summarized by the Moyenne Générale du Semestre (MGS). Courses are organized into Unités d'Enseignement (UE), which contain one or more Éléments Constitutifs (EC/ECUE). Transcripts display the mark out of 20 for each EC, credits earned, and the honorary Mention. Pass mark: 10 / 20. Resits: Sessions de Rattrapage (second session). Rounding: usually two decimal places (e.g. 10.45).
| Main Grading Approach | 20-Point Scale (Numerical weighted average) |
| Typical Grading Scale | 0.00 – 20.00 |
| Local Credit Term | Crédits (aligned with ECTS) |
| Credit-Weighted? | Yes. Results are weighted by credit values (coefficients). |
| Typical Pass Mark | 10 / 20 |
| Resits / Retakes | Sessions de Rattrapage (second session) |
| Rounding Rules | Usually to two decimal places (e.g. 10.45). |
- Individual course grade (Note de l'EC): Most courses use continuous assessment (CC) and a final exam.
Note EC = (Note CC × 0.40) + (Note Examen × 0.60) - Unit grade (Moyenne de l'UE): If a UE has multiple courses, the average uses internal coefficients:
Moyenne UE = Σ(Note EC × Coef EC) / Σ(Coef EC) - Semester average (Moyenne du Semestre): Weighted by credits (30 per semester):
Moyenne Semestrielle = Σ(Moyenne UE × Crédits UE) / 30 - Floor marks (Note Éliminatoire): Many faculties set a floor (typically 5/20 or 7/20). If you score below it in any component, you cannot pass the UE via compensation and must take the resit.
- Resits: In the Session de Rattrapage, only the exam component is retaken. The new exam mark replaces the old one; the CC mark usually remains.

Niger's Crédits are designed to be 1:1 with European ECTS. A 180-credit Licence from Niger is typically recognized as a 3-year Bachelor's degree.
A grade of 14/20 in Niger is considered a high achievement (Good). International admissions officers often mistake it for a 70% "C" when it actually represents top-decile performance. Use professional credential evaluation (e.g. WES, Scholaro) for fair comparison.
