Kuwaiti universities use a system where students "build" their degree through the accumulation of credits. Performance is summarized by the Semester GPA and the Cumulative GPA (CGPA).
A course grade is typically composed of:
- Midterms: 30-40%
- Assignments/Quizzes: 10-20%
- Final Exam: 40-50%
Transcripts show Course Codes, Credits, Letter Grades, and Grade Points. They explicitly state the Academic Standing (e.g., Good Standing, Academic Warning).
- Quality Points: The product of the grade point and the credit hours.
- Major GPA: The average of only the courses within the student's specific specialization.
- Academic Warning: Triggered if the CGPA falls below 2.00.
- Individual Course Grade: Percentage marks are converted to letter grades at the end of the semester. While the percentage range varies slightly by instructor, the Grade Point mapping is fixed.
- Assign Points: Map each letter grade to its value (e.g., B+ = 3.33, A- = 3.67).
- Calculate Quality Points: Multiply the points by the course credits.
- Sum Values: Add all Quality Points and all Credits attempted.
- Divide: GPA = Σ(Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits
- Repeated Courses: If a student retakes a course, the first attempt remains on the transcript, but only the second attempt's points are usually used in the CGPA calculation (at Kuwait University).
- Incomplete (I): Assigned if a student misses a final for a valid reason. They must clear the "I" within the first few weeks of the next semester, or it converts to an F.
- Withdrawal (W): Does not affect the GPA calculation.
