Credit Hours to ECTS Converter

Convert US semester credit hours to ECTS credits — or ECTS back to credit hours — for study abroad, Erasmus+, and international applications. Supports three conversion methods including the standard 1:2 ratio, a contact-hours workload model, and custom institutional ratios.

Standard Ratio

1 US credit hour ≈ 2 ECTS

Workload Standard

1 ECTS = 25–30 work hours

Full-Time Semester

Who Should Use This Converter

Useful for any student, advisor, or institution working across US and European credit systems.

Study Abroad Students

Understand how your home credits translate to ECTS at a European partner university before you enrol.

Erasmus+ Applicants

Prepare your Learning Agreement with accurate ECTS estimates when official tables are not yet available.

International Admissions

Evaluate incoming transcripts from US, Canadian, or Australian institutions in ECTS terms quickly.

Graduate School Applicants

Convert your bachelor's credit total to ECTS for European Master's programme entry requirements.

Academic Advisors

Provide students with quick estimates when official conversion tables are unavailable or delayed.

Credit Transfer Officers

Audit prior learning records and produce ECTS-equivalent figures for institutional recognition decisions.

How the Three Methods Work

Method 1US Semester Credit Hours (Standard Ratio)

The simplest method. Multiplies your credit hours by a fixed ratio. The widely cited ratio for US semester credits is 1:2, reflecting the typical workload difference between the two systems.

ECTS = Credit Hours × 2.0

Example: 15 semester credit hours × 2.0 = 30 ECTS (one full European semester).

Method 2Contact Hours / Workload Model

Builds up from weekly teaching hours. Use this when you know contact hours but not credit hours, or when your institution's ratio differs from 1:2.

Total Workload = Weekly Contact Hours × Weeks × Self-Study Multiplier
ECTS = Total Workload ÷ Hours per ECTS (25 or 30)

Example: 3 contact h/week × 14 weeks × 3 multiplier = 126 hours ÷ 25 = 5 ECTS.

Method 3Custom Institutional Ratio

Use when your registrar or partner university specifies an exact ratio. Common institutional ratios include 1:1.5, 1:2, and 1:3.

ECTS = Credit Hours × Custom Ratio

This method always takes precedence over calculated estimates when an official ratio is available.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Study Abroad Credit Transfer Checklist

Before You Leave
Request the official conversion ratio from your registrar in writing
Complete and sign a Learning Agreement before departure
Confirm minimum ECTS requirements for the host programme

When Applying Abroad
Use official university conversion tables — not calculator estimates
Include explanatory notes with your transcript submission
Provide course syllabi if the admissions office requests them
Ask admissions how they handle borderline credit equivalencies
