Hungarian Grade Calculator (1-5)

Calculate your weighted average (sulyozott tanulmanyi atlag) using Hungary's national 1-5 discrete scale with ECTS credits. Grade 5 is highest, grade 2 is the minimum pass (Elegseges), and grade 1 is fail.

Grading System Overview (Hungary)
National 1-5 scale with ECTS-weighted average

Hungarian universities use a nationally standardized 1 to 5 numerical grading scale for coursework and exams. The local weighted academic average is called sulyozott tanulmanyi atlag and is calculated with ECTS credits.

  • Scale: Discrete values only: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  • Direction: Higher is better (5 highest, 1 lowest).
  • Pass mark: 2 (Elegseges / Sufficient).
  • Credits: ECTS (kredit), with a typical semester load of 30 credits.
  • Weighting: Every course grade is weighted by its ECTS value.

How We Calculate Your Weighted Average
Sulyozott tanulmanyi atlag formula

The semester or cumulative weighted average uses the standard Hungarian ECTS-weighted method:

Weighted Average = Sum(Grade x Credits) / Sum(Credits)

The calculator reports your result to two decimals (for example, 4.51), which matches common Hungarian transcript practice.

Band naming can vary by faculty. Some institutions reserve "Kivalo" for a perfect 5.00 and use "Jeles" for 4.51-4.99.

University Variations in Hungary

The 1-5 grade scale and ECTS framework are national standards, but universities can vary in:

  • Percentage cutoffs used to award 2, 3, 4, and 5 in a specific module.
  • Exact thesis vs final exam weighting in final diploma classification formulas.
  • How scholarship-oriented credit index metrics are computed.
