Percentage Grading

Percentage Grade Calculator

Enter your module scores and credit values to get your exact credit-weighted percentage average — with grading band classification for UK, Generic, A-F, and High-Pass systems.

Who Should Use This Calculator

Undergraduate Students

Track your module average throughout the year and understand exactly where you stand before results day.

International Students

Compare your percentage average against UK, US, and generic bands when applying abroad or converting transcripts.

Postgraduate Applicants

Estimate your undergraduate classification before applying — many master's programmes require a 2:1 (60%+) or Merit (65%+).

Transfer Students

Convert your home institution's credit-weighted average to a comparable figure for your target university's admissions team.

Foundation Year Students

Check whether your current scores are on track for the minimum progression requirements of your target degree programme.

Academic Advisors

Quickly estimate a student's weighted standing across a mixed-credit module load without spreadsheets.

The Formula Behind the Calculator

Credit-Weighted Average Formula
Formula
Weighted % = Σ(score × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

Each module's percentage score is multiplied by its credit value. All products are summed, then divided by the total credits. Courses worth more credits exert proportionally more influence on the final result — exactly as intended.

Why not a simple average?

90% in a 2-credit course + 70% in a 6-credit course = arithmetic average of 80%, but the correct weighted average is 75% because the 6-credit course dominates.

Percentage Grades in an International Context

Why Percentages Vary by Country

A 70% score carries entirely different weight depending on where you studied. UK universities reserve 70+ for genuinely outstanding work; fewer than 25% of students achieve a First Class. In India, 70% is common and a score of 85-90% may be needed to stand out. In Germany, grading is inverted (1.0 = best), and percentage equivalents rarely apply directly.

Direct percentage comparisons across countries can mislead admissions teams and scholarship committees. Always provide context — your institution's grading scale, cohort average, or a credential evaluation from a recognised service.

For Study Abroad and Postgraduate Applications

US / Canada

Most programmes require a WES or ECE evaluation. A 60-70%+ from a UK university typically maps to a 3.3–4.0 GPA for competitive programmes.

UK Postgraduate

Most master's degrees require an Upper Second (60%+) or First (70%+) undergraduate classification, or an equivalent international qualification.

Europe (ECTS)

Erasmus+ and ECTS-based programmes map percentages to an A–F grade table. Use our ECTS Grade Calculator for precise conversion.
