New Zealand Higher Education: NZQF and the 9-Point Scale

The New Zealand higher education system is governed by the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF). It is closely aligned with Australian and British systems but uses a unique 9-point GPA scale. Percentage boundaries can vary slightly between institutions (e.g. Auckland vs Otago); the table below is the standard national benchmark.

Honours Classifications (Level 8)

Honours degrees (Level 8) are classified based on your final GPA across advanced papers (usually 300- and 400-level). Officially NZ uses GPA; this calculator uses percentage-equivalent bands so you can enter percentage marks.

How the GPA (Weighted Average) is Calculated

Weighted average formula

New Zealand uses a weighted average: each course has a point or credit value (usually 15 or 18 points). GPA = Σ(Grade Value × Course Credits) ÷ Σ(Total Credits). This calculator uses the same idea with percentage marks: weighted average = Σ(Mark × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). Enter your percentage per course (from your transcript or letter band midpoints), and we map the result to the Honours bands above.

Example (GPA style): Course A 15 credits Grade A (8), Course B 15 credits Grade B+ (6), Course C 15 credits Grade C (2) → (8×15 + 6×15 + 2×15) / 45 = 5.33 (High B average). In percentage terms, A ≈ 87%, B+ ≈ 77%, C ≈ 57% → weighted avg ≈ 73.7%, which maps to Upper Second (2:1) in our percentage bands.

Credits and ECTS Conversion

New Zealand uses EFTS (Equivalent Full-Time Student) as a measure of workload.

  • 1 full-time year = 120 NZ credits = 1.0 EFTS.
  • ECTS ratio: 2 NZ credits = 1 ECTS.
  • 1 NZ credit ≈ 10 hours of total study (lectures + independent work).

When entering credits in the calculator, use your course credit value (e.g. 15 or 18) so the relative weight of each course is correct.
