CGPA Calculator for Kenya
Calculate your CGPA using Kenya's grading systems. Supports percentage bands, GPA/CGPA (Riara, USIU-Africa, Daystar) and degree classification (University of Nairobi, Kenyatta).
In practice, you'll commonly see two broad approaches:
Percentage bands → letter grades + degree classification
Very common in public universities. Many Kenyan universities present results as percent marks (often from continuous assessment + final exams) mapped into letter grades and degree classification (e.g., First Class, Second Class Upper). For example, the University of Nairobi shows a 40% pass mark and uses bands like 70–100 (A), 60–69 (B), 50–59 (C), 40–49 (D), ≤39 (E/fail).
GPA/CGPA (credit-hour weighted) systems
Common in several private universities and some programs. Some Kenyan universities run a GPA/CGPA system using credit hours and grade-point values. Riara University uses a 4-point GPA scale; USIU-Africa and Daystar University also publish GPA definitions and mappings.
- Credits terminology: Commonly "credit hours" and "course units"
- Typical pass mark: Often 40% (e.g. UoN); some programs set 50%. Check your program handbook.
- Rounding: Institution-specific; Riara rounds GPA/CGPA to 2 decimal places.
A) Verified GPA/CGPA method (Riara University)
- Grades awarded: Each course assigned a letter grade (e.g., A = 80–100, A− = 76–79, down to E = 0–39).
- Convert to grade points: Letter grade → numeric value on 0–4 scale.
- Credits weight the calculation: Courses have credit hours.
- Formula: Trimester GPA = (Σ credit hours × grade value) ÷ total credit hours.
- CGPA: Same formula, using all courses across all trimesters.
- Rounding: Trimester GPA and CGPA rounded to 2 decimal places.
B) Non-GPA approach (University of Nairobi)
Some universities emphasize degree classification based on average marks—First Class, Second Class Upper/Lower, Pass, Fail—with published percentage ranges and pass marks in their academic handbooks.
Riara University (4.0 scale)
| Letter | % Range | GPA (4.0) |
|---|---|---|
| A | 80–100 | 4.00 |
| A- | 76–79 | 3.70–3.99 |
| B+ | 70–75 | 3.33–3.69 |
| B | 66–69 | 3.00–3.32 |
| B- | 60–65 | 2.70–2.99 |
| C+ | 56–59 | 2.33–2.69 |
| C | 50–55 | 2.00–2.32 |
| C- | 46–49 | 1.70–1.99 |
| D | 40–45 | 1.33–1.69 |
| E | 0–39 | 0.00–1.32 |
USIU-Africa (4.0 quality points)
| % Range | Letter | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | A | 4.0 |
| 87–89 | A- | 3.7 |
| 84–86 | B+ | 3.3 |
| 80–83 | B | 3.0 |
| 77–79 | B- | 2.7 |
| 74–76 | C+ | 2.3 |
| 70–73 | C | 2.0 |
| 67–69 | C- | 1.7 |
| 64–66 | D+ | 1.3 |
| 62–63 | D | 1.0 |
| 60–61 | D- | 0.7 |
| 0–59 | F | 0.0 |
| Course | Credits | Grade | Value | Credits × Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BIT 201 | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| BIT 203 | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| BUS 210 | 3 | B | 3.00 | 9.00 |
| STA 202 | 3 | C+ | 2.33 | 6.99 |
| Total | - | - | 37.98 | |
Trimester points = 37.98 ÷ 12 credits = 3.165 → 3.17 (rounded to 2 d.p.)
- Semester/Trimester GPA: GPA for one academic period (Riara uses Trimester GPA).
- Cumulative GPA (CGPA): Across multiple periods / whole program.
- Program/Graduation GPA thresholds: Some universities publish minimum GPA for progression/graduation.
- Degree classification: Where GPA isn't used, overall average mark maps to First Class, Second Class Upper/Lower, Pass.

When applying abroad from Kenya, conversions are usually institution-specific. UK universities often specify Kenya-equivalent entry by degree class and sometimes by % or GPA. UK ENIC provides Statements of Comparability. Independent evaluators (e.g. WES) publish Kenya-focused notes—useful context, but not a substitute for your university's official transcript key.
