SmartCGPA

Vietnam Grading System Calculator

Calculate your GPA using Vietnam's dual-tracking system: 10-point scale for assessments and 4.0 GPA for final results. Supports both standard MOET and granular VNU conversion tables.

Choose Your Grading System
Vietnam universities use more than one grading model. Select the system that matches your transcript or regulations — you can switch modes at any time.

Use this mode to enter raw 10-point marks (0.0–10.0) with credit weighting. This matches how individual course assessments are recorded before conversion to GPA.

Why Vietnam Uses Dual Grading Systems
10-point scale for assessments, 4.0 GPA for final results and international compatibility

Vietnamese higher education is standardized under Circular No. 08/2021/TT-BGDDT issued by the Ministry of Education and Training. Most universities operate on a dual-tracking system:

  • 10-point scale (0.0–10.0): Used for individual course assessments, midterms, finals, and continuous evaluation. Marks are awarded in steps of 0.1.
  • 4.0 GPA scale: Final semester and cumulative results are converted to a 4.0 GPA scale to align with international standards and facilitate study abroad applications.

Modern transcripts show three values for each course: the 10-point score, the Letter Grade (A, B, C, D, F), and the 4.0-scale Grade Point. This hybrid calculator lets you work directly with either system:

  • 10-Point Average Mode: Enter raw 10-point marks (0.0–10.0) with credit weighting. Useful if your transcript shows 10-point scores.
  • 4.0 GPA Mode (Standard MOET): Use the standard 4-tier letter system (A, B, C, D) used by most public universities.
  • 4.0 GPA Mode (Granular VNU): Use the detailed +/- scale (A+, A, B+, B, B-, C, C-, D+, D) used by Vietnam National University and top-tier institutions.

Granular Scale (VNU and Top-Tier Universities)

How GPA is Calculated in Vietnam
Step-by-step credit-weighted average

Vietnamese universities use a credit-based system where degree progress is measured by Accumulated Credits (Tín chỉ tích lũy). The GPA calculation follows these steps:

  1. Convert 10-point marks to Grade Points: Using your university's conversion table (standard MOET or granular VNU), convert each 10-point score to its corresponding 4.0 GPA value.
  2. Multiply Grade Points by Credits: For each course, multiply the grade point by the number of credits (Tín chỉ).
  3. Sum Values: Add all weighted points together, and add all credits together.
  4. Divide: GPA = Total Weighted Points ÷ Total Credits

Formula: GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)

Assessment Structure: A course grade is typically composed of Attendance & Participation (10%), Mid-term Assessment (20–30%), and Final Examination (60–70%). The final 10-point mark is then converted to a letter grade and GPA point.

TOTAL---38.0

Final GPA = 38.0 ÷ 12 = 3.17 on a 4.0 scale

Classification: Good (Khá)

Note: In the standard MOET system, 8.2/10 converts to B (3.0), but if using the granular VNU scale, 8.2 would be B+ (3.5), giving a slightly higher GPA.

What "Final Result" Means in Vietnam
CPA, Academic Warnings, and Degree Classifications
  • CPA (Cumulative GPA / Điểm trung bình tích lũy): Determines the final degree classification. This is your overall GPA across all semesters.
  • Academic Warning: Issued if the semester GPA falls below 0.8 (on a 4.0 scale) or if the cumulative GPA falls below specific thresholds (usually 1.2 to 1.6 depending on the year). Vietnamese universities often have strict "two-strikes" rules: if your cumulative GPA stays below the threshold for two consecutive semesters, you are at high risk of forced withdrawal.
  • Degree Classification:
    • Outstanding (Xuất sắc): 3.60 – 4.00 GPA (9.0–10.0 on 10-point scale)
    • Excellent (Giỏi): 3.20 – 3.59 GPA (8.0–8.9 on 10-point scale)
    • Good (Khá): 2.50 – 3.19 GPA (7.0–7.9 on 10-point scale)
    • Average (Trung bình): 2.00 – 2.49 GPA (5.5–6.9 on 10-point scale)
  • Minimum Graduation GPA: You must achieve at least 2.0/4.0 cumulative GPA to graduate. A 1.9 GPA is not sufficient.
Variations by University
How different institutions implement the grading system
University TypeScale UsedNotable Difference
National Universities (VNU)4.0 and 10Use the granular A+, B+, C+ scale for finer differentiation.
International Universities4.0 OnlyRMIT or BUV often use international letter-grade boundaries.
Private Universities4.0 and 10Often follow the standard MOET 4-tier letter system (A, B, C, D).
International Interpretation
How Vietnamese grades are viewed abroad
  • To USA/WES: A 7.5/10 in Vietnam is often considered highly competitive, equivalent to a 3.3 – 3.5 GPA in the US because 9s and 10s are rarely awarded in Vietnamese public universities.
  • To UK: A 7.0/10 (GPA 3.0) is generally accepted as a 2:1 equivalent.
  • To Australia: Australian universities often look for a 7.0 – 7.5/10 for entry into competitive Master's programs.
