Algerian Grade Calculator

Calculate your weighted average using Algeria's 0–20 grading system. Higher is better—20 is outstanding (extremely rare), 10 is the minimum pass. ECTS credit-weighted as used by University of Algiers, USTHB, Oran, Constantine and other Algerian universities following the LMD framework.

Grading System Overview (Algeria)
0–20 scale (higher is better) — LMD framework aligned with Bologna Process

Algeria uses a 0 to 20 numeric grading scale, where higher numbers are better. The system follows the LMD (Licence, Master, Doctorat) framework, adopted to harmonize with the European Higher Education Area (Bologna Process).

  • Pass mark: 10.00 out of 20.00. This is the minimum weighted average required to validate a semester or year.
  • Perfect scores are rare: A 20/20 is mathematically possible but practically unheard of in most majors. Grades above 16 are extremely rare.
  • Decimal precision: Grades are usually given to two decimal places (e.g., 12.73, 14.50). Rounding up from 0.5 is common in final averages.
  • Credits: Crédits (equivalent to ECTS). 30 credits are required per semester (60 per year).
  • Coefficients: The weight used to calculate the numerical average. Core subjects have higher coefficients (3-4) than electives (1-2).
  • Assessment Structure: Evaluation is split between Contrôle Continu (Continuous Assessment/Tutorials - 40%) and the Examen Final (Final Exam - 60%).
  • Resits: Session de Rattrapage (held after the normal session). Usually the highest mark between the two sessions is retained.
How Grades Are Calculated
Two-tier weighted system: Unit (UE) level, then Semester level

The Algerian calculation uses a two-tier weighted system: first at the Unit (UE) level, then at the Semester level.

  1. Individual Subject Grade (Note de la Matière): Calculated using the ratio of continuous assessment (CC) to final exam (EF). Typically: CC (40%) + EF (60%).
  2. Unit Average (Moyenne de l'UE): Subjects within a Unit (UE) are weighted by their Coefficients.
  3. Semester Average (Moyenne Semestrielle): The overall semester average is calculated by the weighted average of all Units.
  4. Compensation: A semester is "validated" if the overall average is ≥ 10.00, even if some subjects are below 10 (provided they are not below the Eliminatory Mark, which is typically 5/20 in specific cycles like Medicine).
  5. Conceded Pass (Dette): If a student fails to reach a 10.00 average but validates specific units, they may progress to the next year "with debts" (carrying over failed modules).

Formula:

Moyenne Semestrielle = Σ(Grade × Coefficient) / Σ(Coefficient)

Note: Credits (Crédits) represent workload and are awarded upon validation, but Coefficients determine the weight in the average calculation.

Note: These conversions are typically used by US evaluation bodies (like WES/Scholaro). Algerian grading is notoriously harsh; a 14/20 is an "A" in terms of percentile ranking, as marks above 16 are extremely rare.

Result: Passable. (Validated via compensation, as the overall average is ≥ 10.00, despite the 9.00 in Data Structures.)

What "Final Result" Means
Key definitions in the Algerian system
  • Moyenne du Semestre: The weighted average for the 6-month period.
  • Moyenne Annuelle: The average of the two semesters (S1 and S2).
  • Moyenne du Cursus: The cumulative average of all semesters (6 for Licence).
  • Attestation de Succès: A provisional certificate issued after passing the final year before the actual diploma is printed.
  • Matière: A course/subject, grouped into Unités d'Enseignement (UE).
  • Coefficient: The weight used to calculate the numerical average.
  • Crédit: The volume of work; 30 credits are required per semester.
Variations by University
National standardization with institutional variations

The LMD system is standardized by the Ministry (MESRS), but "strictness" varies by faculty.

International Grade Conversion
Algerian grades to UK classification and US GPA

The following conversions are typically used by international admission offices. Always verify with your target institution.

14 – 15.9Upper Second (2:1)B+ (3.3-3.7)

10 – 11.9Third Class (3rd)C (2.0-2.9)
Below 10FailF (0.0-1.9)

Note: An Algerian average of 16/20 is generally considered a First Class (1st) equivalent. A 14/20 is viewed as a 2:1. Algerian grading is notoriously harsh; a 14/20 is an "A" in terms of percentile ranking. Algeria's "Crédits" are designed to be 1:1 with European credits. A 180-credit Licence is recognized as a 3-year Bachelor's degree.
