Grading System Overview (Togo)
LMD framework with 0–20 numerical scale and ECTS-equivalent credits

The university grading system in Togo is governed by the LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorat) framework, a regional standard harmonized through the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education (CAMES). The system uses a 20-point numerical scale and a credit-weighted averaging method.

Student performance is recorded as a numerical mark out of 20. Transcripts do not typically show a GPA on a 4.0 scale; they display the Moyenne Générale du Semestre (MGS) and Mentions (honorary distinctions) for the final degree. A course is called an Unité d'Enseignement (UE); each UE can contain multiple Éléments Constitutifs (EC/ECUE). Assessment is usually split between Contrôles Continus (continuous assessment) and Examens Finaux (final exams).

Credit system: 1 semester = 30 credits. A standard Licence (Bachelor's) requires 180 credits. Pass mark: 10 / 20. Resits are called Sessions de Rattrapage. Rounding is typically to two decimal places (e.g. 11.45).

Key Terminology
Understanding Togolese academic terms
MGS (Moyenne Générale du Semestre): The primary indicator on semester transcripts; credit-weighted average of all UEs.
MGL (Moyenne Générale de la Licence): The cumulative average of all 6 semesters for the Licence degree.
Capitalisation: Once a student obtains 10/20 in a UE, they "capitalize" the credits; these credits are permanently earned and cannot be lost.
Grade de Licence: The degree itself, which states the final cumulative Mention (e.g. Licence en Droit, Mention: Bien).
Ajourné: Failure to validate the semester or the course.
How the Semester Average (MGS) is Calculated
Weighted average, floor mark, and compensation
  1. Individual UE grade (Note de l'UE): Most UEs use a weighted formula combining continuous assessment and final exam. Typical weight: 40% Contrôle Continu / 60% Examen Final.
  2. Semester average (MGS): Multiply each UE grade by its credit value, sum, then divide by total credits attempted:
    MGS = Σ(Grade × Credits) / Σ(Credits)
  3. Internal compensation: Within a single UE, multiple ECUEs can compensate for each other to reach a 10/20 average for that UE.
  4. Floor mark: Most universities (e.g. UL) apply a "floor mark" rule. If a student receives 5/20 or below in any component (EC), they fail that UE immediately, regardless of the UE average. Confirm your faculty's floor (often 5/20 or 7/20).
  5. Semester compensation: If the overall semester average is ≥10.00, the student passes the semester even if individual UEs are below 10, provided no UE is below the compensation floor (often 7 or 8/20).

International Interpretation
How Togolese grades are viewed abroad
UK/USA:

A Togolese grade of 14/20 is often interpreted as an "A" because Togolese professors grade more strictly than US or UK institutions. 16/20 is considered truly exceptional.

Europe:

Togo uses the LMD system; credits are 1:1 with ECTS. A Togolese Licence (180 credits) is equivalent to a European Bachelor's degree.

Caution:

Always use a professional evaluation service (NACES member in the US or ENIC-NARIC in Europe); simple mathematical conversions often undervalue Togolese marks.
