What is ECTS?

European Standard

ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is the standard used across Europe for measuring student workload and academic achievement.

It was adopted to improve transparency in higher education and facilitate credit transfer between European institutions.

How It Works

One ECTS credit represents approximately 25–30 hours of total student work, including lectures, labs, assignments, and exam preparation.

A full-time student typically completes 60 ECTS credits per academic year (30 per semester).

ECTS Countries & Participating Institutions

ECTS is used across all 28 countries in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), including all EU members plus Iceland, Norway, and Turkey. Many universities outside Europe also adopt ECTS to support international mobility.

Key ECTS-using regions:

  • All European Union member states
  • Iceland, Norway, and Turkey
  • Many universities worldwide for exchange programs
  • International degree verification and transfer

Worked Examples

Example 1: Converting a Single Semester to US Credits

A student completed a semester in Spain with 30 ECTS credits (5 courses: 6+6+6+6+6 ECTS).

Courses:

  • Linear Algebra6 ECTS
  • Physics I6 ECTS
  • Chemistry6 ECTS
  • Technical Writing6 ECTS
  • Spanish Language6 ECTS

Calculation: 30 ECTS × 0.5 = 15 US semester hours

The student completed approximately 15 semester hours of work.

Example 2: Two-Year Master's Program GPA Conversion

A student completed a 2-year Master's program (120 ECTS) in Germany and needs to convert their grades to US GPA.

Courses:

  • Advanced Data Structures6 ECTS
  • Machine Learning8 ECTS
  • Database Systems6 ECTS
  • Software Engineering6 ECTS
  • Thesis30 ECTS

Calculation: Weighted Grade = (4.0×6 + 3.5×8 + 4.0×6 + 3.5×6 + 4.0×30) / 56 = 3.88

The student's approximate GPA for the program is 3.88 out of 4.0

Key Considerations

Always verify with your institution

Different universities and graduate programs use different conversion ratios. Contact your admissions office for their official ECTS conversion policy.

No official standardized conversion

ECTS and US credit hours measure different things. Our calculator uses widely accepted approximations, but they are not official standards.

Grade conversions are approximate

The ECTS grade to GPA conversion used here is a common approximation. Your institution may use different mappings.
