World Education Services (WES) is a non-profit organisation founded in 1974 that evaluates international academic credentials for use in the United States and Canada. WES is one of the most widely recognised and accepted credential evaluation agencies in North America — its evaluations are accepted by the majority of US graduate programmes, professional licensing bodies, state boards, and employers that require credential verification for international applicants.
For international students applying to US graduate programmes, a WES course-by-course evaluation is typically required. The course-by-course evaluation provides a US GPA equivalent for your international transcript and lists each course with a US credit hour equivalent and a US grade equivalent. Most US graduate programmes will not process an international application without a recognised credential evaluation — and WES is the most commonly specified evaluator. For a preliminary estimate of your WES GPA before initiating a formal evaluation, use this estimator. For the dedicated WES GPA Calculator, see smartcgpa.com/wes-gpa-calculator.
WES evaluations are also used for Canadian immigration purposes — the Express Entry immigration system uses WES Educational Credential Assessments (ECAs) as part of the points-based Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). For guidance on the full international admissions process, see the blog post on US university applications for international students and the international GPA conversion guide at smartcgpa.com/blog/converting-international-grades-us-gpa-2026.
WES offers two main evaluation types for academic credentials. Understanding which type you need before applying saves time and money.
The Document-by-Document evaluation verifies that your credentials are authentic and equivalent to a US or Canadian credential at the same level. It does not provide a GPA conversion or a course-by-course breakdown. This type is suitable for employment verification, some immigration applications, and situations where a general credential equivalency statement is sufficient. It is not sufficient for most US graduate school applications.
The Course-by-Course evaluation provides a full academic record translation — each course on your transcript is listed with a US credit hour equivalent, a US letter grade equivalent, and a US GPA for each course. A cumulative credit-weighted GPA is calculated across your full transcript. This is the evaluation type required by most US graduate programmes. Use the GPA Calculator at smartcgpa.com/gpa-calculator to understand how GPA is calculated from individual course grades, and the Cumulative GPA Calculator at smartcgpa.com/cumulative-gpa-calculator to track cumulative GPA across semesters.

WES applies country-specific conversion tables to translate international grades into US GPA equivalents. These conversion tables are developed based on the grading norms, passing thresholds, and grade distributions typical of each country's higher education system. The key principle underlying WES conversion is grade interpretation in context, not arithmetic rescaling.
For example: a 70% in a Nigerian university context converts to approximately 2.7–3.2 US GPA (Second Class Lower), while a 70% from a German university on the 0–100 internal scale is roughly equivalent to a 2.3 on the German 1–5 transcript scale and converts to approximately 3.0 US GPA. For country-specific conversion tools, use the International GPA Converter at smartcgpa.com/international-gpa-converter. For ECTS-based European transcripts, see the ECTS Credit Calculator at smartcgpa.com/ects-credit-calculator and the ECTS Grade Calculator at smartcgpa.com/ects-grade-calculator.
Step 1 — Create a WES account at wes.org and start an application. Select the correct evaluation type (course-by-course for US graduate school) and specify the destination country (USA or Canada).
Step 2 — Request official transcripts from your institution. WES requires transcripts sent directly from your university's registrar. For credit conversion context, use the Credit Hours to ECTS Converter at smartcgpa.com/credit-hours-to-ects or the Semester Quarter Converter at smartcgpa.com/semester-quarter-converter.
Step 3 — Arrange certified translation if required. Transcripts not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
Step 4 — Submit your WES application and pay the evaluation fee.
Step 5 — Use this estimator and the WES GPA Calculator at smartcgpa.com/wes-gpa-calculator to anticipate your likely GPA result while your evaluation is being processed.
Step 6 — Once your WES evaluation is complete, download your WES report and send it to your target universities. For medical school applications using AMCAS, use the AMCAS GPA Calculator. For law school applications using LSAC, see the LSAC GPA Calculator.
Most US graduate programmes state a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 on the 4.0 scale for admission consideration. For international students, this threshold applies to the WES-converted GPA — not the raw grade from your home country.
Use the University Match Calculator at smartcgpa.com/university-match-calculator to identify programmes where your WES GPA profile is competitive, and the College Admission Chance Calculator at smartcgpa.com/college-admission-chance-calculator to assess your overall admissions profile. Use the GPA Planner at smartcgpa.com/gpa-planner and Target GPA Calculator at smartcgpa.com/target-gpa-calculator to plan accordingly. For scholarship eligibility, see the Scholarship Eligibility Calculator.
WES is the most widely recognised credential evaluation agency in the United States and Canada, but it is not the only option. Other recognised agencies include Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), NACES member agencies, and Josef Silny and Associates. For Canadian immigration specifically, only IRCC-designated organisations — of which WES is one — can provide the Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) required for Express Entry.
The choice between WES and other agencies depends primarily on what your target institution requires. WES evaluations can be sent electronically to US universities through WES's AAWS system, which streamlines the admissions process compared to mailing paper reports.
Worked Examples
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Country | Nigeria |
| CGPA (5.0 scale) | 4.62 |
| Nigerian classification | First Class |
| Estimated US GPA | 4.0 |
| Performance descriptor | First Class — highly competitive for US graduate admissions |
Result: A Nigerian CGPA of 4.62 falls in the First Class band (4.50–5.00) which maps to an estimated US GPA of 4.0. This is a competitive profile for US Master's and doctoral programmes. The student should also obtain an official WES course-by-course evaluation confirming this estimate.
| Course | Credits | Indian % | Estimated US GPA Points | Weighted Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics III | 4 | 78% | 3.0 | 12.0 |
| Digital Signal Processing | 4 | 83% | 3.3 | 13.2 |
| Control Systems | 4 | 71% | 2.7 | 10.8 |
| VLSI Design | 3 | 88% | 3.5 | 10.5 |
| Communication Systems | 4 | 65% | 2.7 | 10.8 |
| Project Work | 5 | 85% | 3.3 | 16.5 |
| Total | 24 | — | — | 73.8 |
Estimated WES GPA = 73.8 / 24 = 3.08
Result: Estimated WES GPA: 3.08. This meets the standard 3.0 minimum for most US graduate programmes. The student is competitive for admission to many US Master's programmes in Electrical Engineering and related fields. Supplementing with strong GRE scores and research experience significantly strengthens the application.
| Qualification | Country | Original Grade | Estimated US GPA | Credits | Weighted Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSc Computer Science | Ghana | CGPA 3.42 / 4.0 (Second Class Upper) | 3.3 | 120 | 396.0 |
| Postgraduate Diploma in Data Science | UK | Upper Second (2:1) | 3.3 | 60 | 198.0 |
| Combined total | — | — | — | 180 | 594.0 |
Combined estimated WES GPA = 594.0 / 180 = 3.30
Result: Combined estimated WES GPA: 3.30. Note: WES may produce separate GPA figures for each credential rather than a single combined GPA. This combined estimate is for planning purposes. A 3.30 combined profile is competitive for a range of US graduate programmes in technology and data fields.
