The Gambia Higher Education: GPA and Honours System
The Gambian higher education system blends American-style GPA with British-style Honours classifications. The National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) oversees standards, with the University of The Gambia (UTG) being the primary public institution.
| Typical Scale | 0.00 – 4.30 (UTG) or 0.00 – 4.00 (AIUWA) |
| Typical Pass Mark | 40% (Grade D) Undergrad; 50% (C-) Postgrad |
| Attendance Requirement | 80% minimum (automatic F if not met) |
| Good Standing | CGPA 2.0 minimum each semester |

Degree Classification (Honours)
The final CQPA determines your Honours classification. This calculator uses percentage-weighted averages that map to these classifications.
| Classification | CQPA Range | Approx. Percentage (this calculator) |
|---|---|---|
| First Class Honours | 4.00 – 4.30 | 80%+ |
| Second Class Upper Division (2:1) | 3.00 – 3.99 | 65% – 79% |
| Second Class Lower Division (2:2) | 2.50 – 2.99 | 55% – 64% |
| Third Class / Pass | 2.00 – 2.49 | 40% – 54% |
| Fail / No Award | Below 2.00 | Below 40% |
Student guidance
Don't overlook the attendance policy! In The Gambia, even if you're an "A" student in exams, missing too many classes will result in an "F" and 0.0 on your GPA. Always sign the attendance register.
Latin Honours (Faculty of Law)
Some faculties at UTG use Latin Honours in addition to standard classifications:
| Latin Honour | CQPA Range |
|---|---|
| Summa Cum Laude | 4.000 – 4.300 |
| Magna Cum Laude | 3.850 – 3.990 |
| Cum Laude | 3.700 – 3.840 |
How the Calculation Works
GPA = Σ(Quality Point Value × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Total Credit Hours). This calculator uses the same idea with percentage marks: weighted average = Σ(Mark × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). Enter your percentage per course and set year weights if applicable.
