Malawi Higher Education: Percentage-Based Honours System
In Malawi, university performance is primarily recorded as a percentage. The Class of Degree is determined by the Weighted Percentage Average. The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) regulates standards across institutions including UNIMA, MZUNI, and MUBAS.
| Typical Scale | 0–100% (Primary); 4.0 GPA (Secondary) |
| Typical Pass Mark | 50% (most public universities); 40% (Pass Class at UNIMA) |
| Assessment Structure | CA (40-60%) + Final Exam (40-60%) |
| Supplementary Exams | Available; typically capped at 50% |
UNIMA Grading Scale
| Percentage | Letter Grade | Description | Honours Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 75% – 100% | A | Distinction | First Class |
| 70% – 74% | B+ | Marginal Distinction | First Class |
| 60% – 69% | B | Credit | Upper Second Class |
| 50% – 59% | C | Pass | Lower Second Class |
| 40% – 49% | D | Bare Pass | Pass Class |
| 0% – 39% | F | Fail | Failure |

Degree Classification (Honours)
The final Weighted Average determines your Honours classification. This calculator maps your percentage average to these classifications.
| Classification | Weighted Average | UK Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| First Class Honours | 70% – 100% | 1st Class |
| Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) | 60% – 69% | 2:1 |
| Lower Second Class Honours (2:2) | 50% – 59% | 2:2 |
| Pass Class | 40% – 49% | Third Class / Pass |
| Fail | Below 40% | Fail |
Student guidance
Don't assume 50% is a "poor" mark! In the Malawian system, 50% is a solid "Pass" and 60% is a "Credit." Aiming for 70%+ places you in the elite "First Class" category, which is recognized globally as an A-equivalent.
How the Calculation Works
Weighted Average = Σ(Percentage Mark × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). Enter your percentage per module and credit value. Set year weights if your university uses different weightings for Years 2, 3, 4.
Major Malawian Universities
| University | Approach | Pass Mark |
|---|---|---|
| University of Malawi (UNIMA) | Honours Classification | 40% (Pass Class) |
| MUBAS | Points/GPA + Honours | 50% |
| Mzuzu University (MZUNI) | Honours Classification | 50% |
| LUANAR | Percentage-based | 50% |
