Malawi Higher Education: Percentage-Based Honours System

In Malawi, university performance is primarily recorded as a percentage. The Class of Degree is determined by the Weighted Percentage Average. The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) regulates standards across institutions including UNIMA, MZUNI, and MUBAS.

Quick Facts
Typical Scale0–100% (Primary); 4.0 GPA (Secondary)
Typical Pass Mark50% (most public universities); 40% (Pass Class at UNIMA)
Assessment StructureCA (40-60%) + Final Exam (40-60%)
Supplementary ExamsAvailable; typically capped at 50%

Student guidance

Don't assume 50% is a "poor" mark! In the Malawian system, 50% is a solid "Pass" and 60% is a "Credit." Aiming for 70%+ places you in the elite "First Class" category, which is recognized globally as an A-equivalent.

How the Calculation Works

Weighted Average Mark (WAM)

Weighted Average = Σ(Percentage Mark × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). Enter your percentage per module and credit value. Set year weights if your university uses different weightings for Years 2, 3, 4.

Example: 4 modules totaling 48 credits. Marks: 72%, 65%, 58%, 78%. Credits: 12, 12, 12, 12. Weighted Points = 864 + 780 + 696 + 936 = 3276. Average = 3276 / 48 = 68.25% → Upper Second Class Honours.
