Student guidance

Students often assume all years count equally toward their final degree classification. At UWI Cave Hill, Level I is for foundation. Your Degree GPA starts in Year 2. If you are struggling in Year 1, don't panic—focus on passing and ensure you hit the 2.0 minimum to avoid Academic Warning.

How the Calculation Works

GPA and Weighted Average

GPA = Σ(Quality Points × Quality Hours) ÷ Σ(Quality Hours). This calculator uses the same idea with percentage marks: weighted average = Σ(Mark × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). Enter your percentage per course (from your transcript) and set year weights (e.g. Year 1 = 0%, Year 2 = 50%, Year 3 = 50%). The result maps to the Honours bands above.

Example: 5 Level III courses totaling 15 credits. Grades: A (4.0), B+ (3.3), C+ (2.3), A- (3.7), F1 (1.7). Grade Points = 12 + 9.9 + 6.9 + 11.1 + 5.1 = 45.0. Semester GPA = 45.0 / 15 = 3.00 → Upper Second Class.
