Czech Republic Grade Calculator

Calculate your Vážený studijní průměr (Weighted Study Average) using the Czech Republic's 1–4 grading system. Lower is better—1 = excellent, 3 = pass. Dual scale with ECTS (A–F). ECTS credit-weighted as used by Charles University, CTU Prague, Masaryk University and other Czech universities.

Czech Grading System Overview
Understanding the dual scale: 1–4 (National) and A–F (ECTS)

In the Czech Republic, the university grading system is a hybrid. While most universities have fully adopted the A–F ECTS scale for international compatibility, the traditional 1–4 numerical scale is still widely used for internal records and GPA calculations.

You will often see two grades on your transcript: the "National Grade" (1–4) and the ECTS Grade (A–F).

Zápočet (Credit/Pass)

Before you can take the final exam ("Zkouška") for a course, you often need to get a "Zápočet." This is a Pass/Fail status awarded for completing seminars, attendance, or homework. It does not affect your GPA but is required to pass the course.

How Czech Grades Are Calculated

Weighted Study Average (Vážený studijní průměr)

GPA = (Σ Numerical Grade × ECTS) / (Σ ECTS)

The numerical value of your grade is weighted by the ECTS credits of the course. Remember: Lower averages are better! A 1.0 is perfect; anything above 3.0 is a fail.

Numerical Values for GPA Calculation:

  • A = 1.0
  • B = 1.5
  • C = 2.0
  • D = 2.5
  • E = 3.0
  • F = 4.0

ECTS & Workload:

  • 1 ECTS = ~26 hours of student workload (varies slightly by university, usually 25–30 hours)
  • Bachelor's (Bakalář - Bc.): 180 ECTS (3 years)
  • Master's (Magistr - Mgr. / Ing.): 120 ECTS (2 years)
  • Standard Year: 60 ECTS

Red Diploma (Červený diplom)
Czech equivalent of graduating "Summa Cum Laude"

This is the Czech equivalent of graduating "Summa Cum Laude." To get a Red Diploma, you usually need:

  • A weighted average of 1.5 or better for the entire degree
  • A grade of A (Výborně) on your State Final Exam (Státnice)
  • No grade of F on your transcript (no retakes)

The Red Diploma is highly prestigious and significantly improves your chances in the job market and for PhD admissions.

State Final Examination (Státnice)

Passing all your classes isn't enough to graduate. You must also pass the State Final Examination (Státní závěrečná zkouška).

  • This is a separate, oral exam covering the entire scope of your degree
  • You also have to defend your Bachelor's or Master's thesis
  • These are graded on the same A–F / 1–4 scale but are listed separately on your diploma

Three Exam Attempts

You have three attempts per exam:

  • Regular Term (Řádný termín)
  • 1st Resit (1. opravný termín)
  • 2nd Resit (2. opravný termín)

If you fail the 2nd resit, you fail the class.

The Title "Ing."

If you study Economics, Engineering, or Technology, you graduate as an Ing. (Inženýr), not a generic "Master." In the Czech Republic (and Austria/Germany), this title is prestigious and is often used in professional settings (e.g., "Hello, Ing. Novák").
