Slovak Grade Calculator (A–FX)

Calculate your VŠP (Vážený študijný priemer – Weighted Study Average) using Slovakia's ECTS letter scale (A, B, C, D, E, FX) and numerical values 1–4. Lower is better. Pass mark is E (3.0); FX (4.0) is fail. Used at Comenius University, STU Bratislava, EUBA, and TUKE.

Grading System Overview (Slovakia)
ECTS letter scale (A–FX) with numerical values 1–4

Slovak university grading is governed by the national Act on Higher Education (Act No. 131/2002 Coll.) and uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). Performance is measured with a letter scale (A to FX), each tied to a numerical value (1–4), which is used to calculate the Weighted Study Average (VŠP).

  • Pass mark: Usually 51–60% (Grade E / numerical 3), depending on the university. FX (4.0) is fail.
  • Credits (Kredity): ECTS. 60 credits per year; 1 credit ≈ 25–30 hours of workload.
  • Assessment: Continuous assessment (tests/assignments) and a final examination. Courses typically award points (0–100); 56–60% is often required to pass.
  • Vážený študijný priemer (VŠP): Weighted Study Average. Lower is better. FX is included with value 4.0 and significantly lowers the average.
  • Zápočet (Z): “Requirement Fulfilled” – courses that do not award a grade but grant credits (e.g. Physical Education). Z is excluded from VŠP.
  • Resits: Usually 2 attempts (regular + 1st retake); some universities allow a 2nd retake.
How VŠP (Weighted Study Average) Is Calculated
Lower numerical value = better performance

Each letter grade is converted to a numerical value: A = 1.0, B = 1.5, C = 2.0, D = 2.5, E = 3.0, FX = 4.0.

Step 1: For each course, multiply the numerical value by ECTS credits (Kredity). Step 2: VŠP = sum of these products ÷ total credits registered (graded courses only; Z is excluded).

VŠP = Σ(Numerical value × ECTS) ÷ Σ(ECTS)

Special rules: FX is included in VŠP with value 4.0. Non-graded courses (Z) are excluded. Results are typically rounded to two or three decimal places.

International Interpretation (US / UK)
Common mapping for applications abroad

To USA: Slovak 1.0 ≈ 4.0 GPA. Because Slovak grading is strict (especially in STEM), an average of 1.8 is often viewed as 3.3–3.5 GPA.

To UK: Overall VŠP ≤ 1.5 is generally considered First Class (1st) equivalent. VŠP 1.6–2.0 is typically 2:1.

ECTS: 1 Slovak credit = 25–30 hours of total student workload. 60 credits = 1 academic year.

What Your Final Result Means
  • Vážený študijný priemer (VŠP): The master average; a lower number is better. Shown on transcripts and used for scholarships and honours.
  • Graduation with Honours (Červený diplom): Typically awarded if the overall VŠP for the entire study is ≤ 1.50, the state examination result is A (Excellent), and the student has never received E or FX during the program (varies by university).
  • Diploma Supplement: Provided in Slovak and English, listing all VŠP scores and ECTS distributions.
