Trinidad and Tobago Higher Education: GPA and Degree Classification

In Trinidad and Tobago, university assessment follows a North American–style GPA system, but the final award is categorized using the British-style Class of Degree (First Class, Upper Second, Lower Second, Pass). Transcripts show percentage marks, letter grades, quality points, semester GPA, and cumulative GPA. The Weighted GPA (based on Levels II and III only) determines your Honours classification.

Student guidance

Many students assume high Year 1 marks will boost their final classification. At UWI, Level I (Year 1) results are not part of the Weighted GPA for honours. Focus heavily on Levels II and III to secure a First Class or Upper Second Class award.

How the Calculation Works

GPA and Weighted Average

GPA = Σ(Quality Points × Quality Hours) ÷ Σ(Quality Hours). This calculator uses the same idea with percentage marks: weighted average = Σ(Mark × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). Enter your percentage per course (from your transcript) and set year weights (e.g. Year 1 = 0%, Year 2 = 50%, Year 3 = 50%). The result maps to the Honours bands above.

Example: 5 courses in Year 2, totaling 15 credits. Grades: A (4.0), B+ (3.3), C (2.0), A- (3.7), B- (2.7). Grade Points = 12 + 9.9 + 6 + 11.1 + 8.1 = 47.1. Semester GPA = 47.1 / 15 = 3.14 → Upper Second Class.
