Grading System Overview (Ecuador)
0.0–10.0 decimal scale (Standard) with SATCA credits; institutional variations 0–100, 4.0 GPA

Ecuadorian university grading is primarily governed by the LOES (Ley Orgánica de Educación Superior) and regulations of the CES (Consejo de Educación Superior). While a 0.0–10.0 scale is the most common national standard, several prestigious institutions use distinct scales (0–100 or letter-based GPA) to align with international standards.

  • Promedio Ponderado: The weighted average of all grades, weighted by the credits of each course.
  • SATCA: The credit system used in Ecuador, where 1 credit represents 48 hours of work (teaching + autonomous study).
  • Pass mark: Usually 7.0/10 for undergraduate programs. Polytechnic schools (ESPOL, EPN) often use 6.0/10 due to the high difficulty of engineering courses.
  • Supletorio: A "supplementary" exam taken if a student fails the regular sessions but maintains a minimum threshold (usually 5.0/10).
  • Attendance: LOES mandates a minimum of 75% to 80% attendance to validate a course, regardless of the numerical grade.
Key Definitions
Understanding Ecuadorian terminology
Promedio Ponderado: The weighted average calculated by multiplying each grade by its credit value, summing the results, and dividing by total credits.
Promedio Acumulado: Cumulative GPA of all subjects taken; used for graduation honors.
SATCA Credit: Sistema de Asignación y Transferencia de Créditos Académicos. 1 credit = 48 hours of work (16 hours teaching + 32 hours autonomous study).
Supletorio: A supplementary exam for students who score between 5.0 and 6.9. If passed, the final grade is often capped at the minimum passing mark (7.0).
Matrícula de Honor: Award for students with 9.0+ average; often results in tuition discount for the following semester.
Trabajo de Titulación: Thesis or final project required for graduation. Can be replaced by "Examen Complexivo" in some programs.
Step-by-Step CGPA Calculation
Standard Ecuadorian method (0–10 scale)
  1. Individual Subject Grade: Grades are typically awarded as a sum of partial evaluations (Aporte, Examen Parcial, Examen Final). The final grade for each course is out of 10.0.
  2. Credit Weighting: Grade Points Earned = Grade × Credits for that course.
  3. Total Credits: Sum of all credits attempted in the semester or cumulative program.
  4. Total Grade Points: Sum of all Grade Points Earned across all courses.
  5. Promedio Ponderado: Weighted Average = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credits.
  6. Rounding: Usually rounded to two decimal places; rounding practices vary by institution.
Formula: Promedio Ponderado = Σ(Grade × Credits) / Σ(Total Credits)

Minimum Pass Threshold:

Most universities require a 7.0/10 to pass. However, polytechnic schools (like ESPOL or EPN) often use a 6.0/10 pass mark due to the high difficulty of engineering courses.

Supletorios (Supplementary Exams):

If a student's final average is between 5.0 and 6.9, they may take a Supletorio. If they pass the exam, their final grade for that course is often capped at the minimum passing mark (e.g., 7.0). This pulls down the Promedio Acumulado significantly.

Attendance Requirement:

LOES mandates a minimum of 75% to 80% attendance to validate a course, regardless of the numerical grade. Missing attendance can result in automatic failure.

Retakes:

Both the failing grade and the subsequent passing grade usually appear on the transcript. Some institutions may replace the old grade in GPA calculation, while others average them.

International Interpretation
How Ecuadorian grades are viewed abroad
To Europe (ECTS):

Ecuadorian credits are intense. Generally, 1 SATCA Credit ≈ 1.5 ECTS credits. A 4-year degree (approx. 160-200 credits) is equivalent to a 240 ECTS Bachelor's degree.

To USA:

Evaluators recognize the strictness of Ecuadorian grading. A 7.0 is a "Pass," but for graduate admission, a minimum of 8.0/10.0 is usually required to be considered competitive (B average).

USFQ Students:

USFQ uses the American 4.0 scale natively, so no conversion is needed for US applications. Other Ecuadorian universities require credential evaluation by WES or similar services.
