Grading System Overview (Niger)
LMD framework with 0–20 scale and ECTS-aligned credits

In the Republic of Niger, university grading is aligned with the LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorat) framework harmonized across Francophone Africa (CAMES and REESAO). The system centers on a 20-point numerical scale, with academic progress measured by the "capitalization" of credits.

Assessment is divided into semesters, each worth 30 credits. Students do not receive a GPA in the American sense; performance is summarized by the Moyenne Générale du Semestre (MGS). Courses are organized into Unités d'Enseignement (UE), which contain one or more Éléments Constitutifs (EC/ECUE). Transcripts display the mark out of 20 for each EC, credits earned, and the honorary Mention. Pass mark: 10 / 20. Resits: Sessions de Rattrapage (second session). Rounding: usually two decimal places (e.g. 10.45).

Key Definitions
Understanding Nigerien academic terms
Capitalisation: Once a UE is validated (grade ≥ 10/20), the credits are permanently acquired and cannot be lost.
Compensation: Allowing a high mark in one subject to balance a low mark in another so that the average reaches 10/20. Subject to floor mark (Note Éliminatoire) rules.
Défaillance: Failure to attend an exam or missing too many practicals (TP), resulting in an automatic fail for the session.
Mention: An honorary label (e.g. Bien, Assez Bien) based on your average, shown on transcripts and the final degree.
How the Semester Average is Calculated
Three levels: EC, UE, and Semester
  1. Individual course grade (Note de l'EC): Most courses use continuous assessment (CC) and a final exam.
    Note EC = (Note CC × 0.40) + (Note Examen × 0.60)
  2. Unit grade (Moyenne de l'UE): If a UE has multiple courses, the average uses internal coefficients:
    Moyenne UE = Σ(Note EC × Coef EC) / Σ(Coef EC)
  3. Semester average (Moyenne du Semestre): Weighted by credits (30 per semester):
    Moyenne Semestrielle = Σ(Moyenne UE × Crédits UE) / 30
  4. Floor marks (Note Éliminatoire): Many faculties set a floor (typically 5/20 or 7/20). If you score below it in any component, you cannot pass the UE via compensation and must take the resit.
  5. Resits: In the Session de Rattrapage, only the exam component is retaken. The new exam mark replaces the old one; the CC mark usually remains.

What "Final Result" Means
Key terms on transcripts and diplomas
Moyenne du Semestre: Performance for one 6-month block (semester).
Moyenne Annuelle: The average of Semesters 1 and 2.
Moyenne de la Licence: The final average over the full 3 years of the Licence degree.
Annexe au Diplôme: A "Diploma Supplement" introduced with LMD that explains credits and courses in detail for international employers.

International Interpretation
How Nigerien grades are viewed abroad
ECTS alignment:

Niger's Crédits are designed to be 1:1 with European ECTS. A 180-credit Licence from Niger is typically recognized as a 3-year Bachelor's degree.

Strictness note:

A grade of 14/20 in Niger is considered a high achievement (Good). International admissions officers often mistake it for a 70% "C" when it actually represents top-decile performance. Use professional credential evaluation (e.g. WES, Scholaro) for fair comparison.
