Grading System Overview (Côte d'Ivoire)
LMD framework with 0–20 numerical scale and CECT credits

Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) follows the LMD (Licence, Master, Doctorat) system, a standardized framework used across Francophone Africa to align with the European Higher Education Area.

The system is centered on a 20-point numerical scale and the use of transferable credits (CECT - Crédit d'Evaluation Capitalisable et Transférable).

Assessment Structure: A module (ECUE) is typically graded via Continuous Assessment (Contrôle Continu - CC) which accounts for 40%, and a Final Examination (Exame Terminal) which accounts for 60%.

Pass mark: 10.00 / 20.00. The system features a powerful "Compensation" mechanism at UE, semester, and annual levels, allowing high grades to offset low grades.

Credits: 30 CECT per semester (60 per academic year). A Licence (Bachelor's) requires 180 credits over 3 years (6 semesters).

Key Definitions
Understanding Ivorian terminology
UE (Unité d'Enseignement): A grouping of related modules (teaching unit).
ECUE (Élément Constitutif d'Unité d'Enseignement): An individual subject or module that makes up a UE.
CECT: Credits that can be transferred or stored (capitalized) once a unit is passed. 1 CECT ≈ 25 hours of student work.
Coefficient: The multiplier used to reflect the importance or workload of a specific module when calculating averages.
Moyenne Générale Pondérée: The final weighted average of the degree.
Compensation: A system where high grades can compensate for low grades at UE, semester, or annual level. If overall average ≥10, the period is validated despite individual module failures.
Capitalization: Once a UE is validated (scored 10+), the credits are "capitalized" and cannot be lost, even if the student fails other parts of the program.
Mention: The qualitative descriptor attached to the final degree (e.g., Mention Bien, Mention Très Bien).
Step-by-Step Weighted Average Calculation
How to calculate Moyenne Semestrielle (MS)
  1. Calculating a Module Grade (ECUE): The final mark for a subject is calculated as:
    Mark = (CC × 40%) + (Exam × 60%)

Where CC = Continuous Assessment (Contrôle Continu) and Exam = Final Examination.

  2. Identify Coefficient: Each module (ECUE) has an assigned Coefficient (C) that reflects its importance or workload.
  3. Weighted Score per Module: Multiply each module's grade (G) by its coefficient (C): Weighted Score = G × C.
  4. Sum All Weighted Scores: Add up all the weighted scores from all modules.
  5. Sum All Coefficients: Add up all the coefficients from all modules.
  6. Calculate Semester Average (MS): Divide total weighted scores by total coefficients:
    MS = Σ(Grade × Coefficient) / Σ(Coefficient)
  7. Check Validation: If MS ≥ 10.00, the semester is validated and all 30 CECT credits are awarded (even if some modules are <10, thanks to compensation).
  8. Determine Mention: Based on the final average, a Mention is assigned (Très Bien, Bien, Assez Bien, Passable, or Ajourné).
Formula: MS = Σ(Gi × Ci) / Σ(Ci)

Total Coefficients: 4 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 11
Semester Average (MS): 123.00 ÷ 11 = 11.18
Result: Semester VALIDATED (MS > 10.00)
Mention: Passable
*Droit Constitutionnel (8.50) is below 10, but thanks to Compensation, student Kouassi is awarded all 30 credits for the semester.
**Only 12 credits shown above; full semester = 30 CECT total.
Compensation Rules
Three-level compensation system
1. UE Compensation:

If a UE consists of multiple modules (e.g., Math and Statistics), a high grade in one can compensate for a low grade in the other, as long as the UE average is ≥10.00.

2. Semester Compensation:

If the overall semester average (MS) is ≥10.00, the student validates the entire semester and all associated 30 CECT credits, even if some individual modules were below 10.

3. Annual Compensation:

In many universities, if the average of Semester 1 and Semester 2 is ≥10.00, the entire year is validated (60 credits awarded).

Resits (Rattrapage):

If a student fails to reach a 10.00 average through the regular session and compensation, they must take the Session de Rattrapage. Only the failed modules are retaken.

Strategic Tip:

The "Compensation" rule is your best friend—focus on your strongest subjects to "pull up" your weaker ones and ensure your overall semester average stays above 10.00.

What "Final Result" Means
Understanding degree status and outcomes
Moyenne Générale Pondérée: The final weighted average of the degree.
Admission (AD): Status indicating the student has passed the year.
Ajourné (AJ): Status indicating the student has failed and must retake exams.
Capitalization: Once a UE is validated (scored 10+), the credits are "capitalized" and cannot be lost, even if the student fails other parts of the program.
Validé (V): Indicates a module or UE has been successfully passed.
Compensé (APC): Marks awarded through compensation (typically 8.00-9.99 when overall average ≥10.00).
