How to Use the Easy Grader
- Type the number of questions on the test in Total questions (up to 200).
- Type how many the student got wrong. If you counted the right answers instead, type the number correct and the other box fills itself in.
- Read the percentage and the letter grade. The percentage is shown to one decimal place, and the letter comes from the grading scale further down this page.
- To grade the whole class, keep the same total and read each paper's grade from the easy grader chart, which lists every possible number wrong.
That makes it a quick grade calculator for teachers marking a stack of quizzes or multiple-choice tests. It assumes every question is worth the same. If questions carry different points, use the test grade calculator for points-based tests and enter the points earned and points possible.

Easy Grader Formula With a Worked Example
Percentage = (total questions − number wrong) ÷ total questions × 100
For a 20-question quiz where a student gets 3 wrong:
- Number correct: 20 − 3 = 17.
- Divide by the total: 17 ÷ 20 = 0.85.
- Multiply by 100: 85%.
- 85% is at least 80% but below 90%, so it's a B on the default scale.
Each question is worth 100 ÷ total percentage points. On a 20-question test that's 5 points, so every extra mistake takes off 5%. On a 30-question test each question is worth about 3.3 points, which is why 4 wrong gives 86.7% rather than a round number. Once you have percentages for several tests or modules, the percentage grade calculator averages them, weighted by credits.
Grading Scale Used
By default the easy grader uses the common 10-point scale: an A is 90% and above, a B 80%, a C 70%, a D 60%, and anything below 60% is an F. Many schools set their own cutoffs or use plus and minus grades, so you can change the minimum for each letter here. The calculator, the chart and the test-length tables all update.
F is anything below 60%.
Percentages aren't rounded up before grading. For example, 179 out of 200 is 89.5%, which is a B unless you lower the A cutoff.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions can you miss and still get an A?
With an A at 90%, a student can miss up to 10% of the questions, rounded down. That's 1 on 10, 2 on 20, 2 on 25, 3 on 30, 4 on 40, 5 on 50, and 10 on 100 questions. If your A starts higher, change the scale and the test-length tables above show the new limits.
How do I grade a whole class with the easy grader?
Type the total once, then read each paper's grade from the easy grader chart by its number wrong. You don't need to retype anything between students. When the class is marked, you can work out the class average from the percentages.
What letter grade is 75 percent?
On the default scale, 75% is a C, because it's at least 70% and below 80%. If your school uses different cutoffs, enter them in the grading scale section and the calculator follows.
Can I use the easy grader if questions are worth different points?
No. It assumes every question counts the same, so each mistake takes off the same percentage. For a test marked in points, such as essay questions worth 10 and short answers worth 2, add up the points earned and points possible and use the test grade calculator mentioned above.
How do I turn test grades into a course grade?
Add each test with its points in the grade calculator, or use the weighted grade calculator if your categories have weights, such as tests 50% and homework 20%.
