Polish Grade Calculator (2.0–5.0)

Calculate your weighted average (Średnia ocen) using Poland's 2.0–5.0 scale and ECTS credits (Punkty ECTS). Pass mark is 3.0 (Dostateczny); 2.0 is fail. Used at University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian, and all Polish universities.

Grading System Overview (Poland)
2.0–5.0 scale with ECTS (Punkty ECTS)

Polish higher education uses a standardized 2.0–5.0 numerical scale and the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The system follows the Bologna Process and is designed for transparency and international mobility.

  • Pass mark: 3.0 (Dostateczny – Satisfactory). 2.0 (Niedostateczny) is fail.
  • Credits (Punkty ECTS): 60 ECTS per year (30 per semester). Bachelor: usually 180 (Licencjat) or 210 (Inżynier).
  • Assessment: Ćwiczenia (tutorials/continuous assessment) and Egzamin (final exam). Passing tutorials is often a prerequisite for sitting the final exam.
  • Średnia ocen: GPA = weighted average of passing grades (3.0–5.0). Failing grades (2.0) are excluded from the final diploma average but may count for scholarship (Stypendium rektora).
  • Zaliczenie (Zal.): Pass/Fail credit without a numerical grade (e.g. some labs/seminars). Poprawka: Retake exam; first retake is usually free.
How Grades and GPA Are Calculated
Średnia ocen = ECTS-weighted average

Internal point thresholds vary by faculty. A typical mapping (e.g. University of Warsaw) from percentage to grade: 91–100% → 5.0, 81–90% → 4.5, 71–80% → 4.0, 61–70% → 3.5, 51–60% → 3.0, 0–50% → 2.0.

The Średnia ocen (GPA) is the weighted arithmetic mean:

Średnia ocen = Σ(Grade × ECTS) ÷ Σ(ECTS)

Only passing grades (3.0–5.0) are used for the final degree average. The diploma grade is often a composite: 60% weighted average of all grades, 20% diploma thesis grade, 20% final diploma exam grade.

Special rules: Conditional pass (wpis warunkowy) may allow progression to the next year while retaking a failed subject. Retakes (Poprawki) are usually free for the first attempt.

What Your Final Result Means
  • Średnia ocen: The overall weighted average of all passed courses, shown on the transcript (Suplement do dyplomu).
  • Diploma Supplement: English-Polish document with every grade, ECTS credits, and cohort ranking.
  • Dyplom z wyróżnieniem (Degree with Distinction): Usually requires a cumulative GPA of 4.50 or 4.75 (varies by university) and no failing grades during the program.
