T-Level UCAS Points Calculator
T-Levels are Level 3 technical qualifications worth significant UCAS tariff points — equivalent in size to three A-Levels. This tool helps students instantly convert their T-Level grade into UCAS tariff points for 2025 university applications.
What Is a T-Level?
T-Levels are two-year technical qualifications introduced in England, designed as a high-quality alternative to A-Levels for students pursuing vocational or technical careers. They are equivalent in size to three A-Levels, combining classroom-based study with a substantial industry placement of at least 315 hours. This placement component ensures students gain real-world experience in their chosen sector.
T-Levels were developed in close collaboration with employers and leading industry bodies to ensure the content reflects genuine workplace requirements. They are currently available in sectors including Digital, Construction, Education and Early Years, Health and Science, Engineering and Manufacturing, Business and Administration, Finance and Accounting, and Legal Services — with further routes being introduced each year.
Each T-Level consists of a Core component and an Occupational Specialism. The Core covers the knowledge and skills common to an occupational area, while the Specialism allows students to focus on a specific job role or technical pathway within that sector. Both components contribute to the overall grade. You can also compare your T-Level UCAS points against other qualifications using our UCAS Points Calculator.
UCAS began accepting T-Levels in the tariff from 2023 entry onwards, meaning students who achieved a T-Level qualification and applied to university from 2023 could include their T-Level UCAS points in their application alongside points from any other eligible qualifications. This was a significant milestone in establishing T-Levels as a mainstream route to higher education in England.
T-Level UCAS Points Table
The table below shows the official 2024/25 UCAS Tariff Points for each T-Level overall grade, alongside approximate A-Level equivalencies. Use our A-Level to UCAS Points calculator to compare values directly.
| T-Level Grade | UCAS Tariff Points | Equivalent A-Level Grade(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Distinction* | 168 | A*A*A* (approx.) |
| Distinction | 144 | A*AA (approx.) |
| Merit | 120 | ABB (approx.) |
| Pass | 96 | CCC (approx.) |
A-Level equivalencies are approximate and for guidance only. Individual universities may assess T-Levels differently — always check each institution's entry requirements directly.
How T-Level UCAS Points Are Calculated
T-Level UCAS Tariff Points are awarded based on the overall qualification result, not on individual component grades. The overall grade takes into account performance across both the Core component and the Occupational Specialism, and is expressed as a single grade — Distinction*, Distinction, Merit, or Pass. You can use our guide to calculating UCAS points for a deeper understanding of how the tariff system works.
Key facts about how T-Level points are awarded:
- Overall grade only: T-Levels are graded on the combined overall result, not on individual Core or Specialism components separately.
- Awarding organisations: The grading is set by awarding organisations including NCFE, Pearson, and City & Guilds, depending on the T-Level pathway.
- Tariff inclusion from 2023: The UCAS tariff was updated to include T-Levels from the 2023 university entry cycle onwards.
- Distinction* explained: The Distinction* (pronounced "Distinction Star") is awarded for outstanding performance across both the Core component and the Occupational Specialism. It is the highest available grade and carries the most UCAS Tariff Points.
- No partial credit: Unlike A-Levels where each subject earns points independently, T-Level points come from the single overall grade for the whole qualification.
T-Level vs A-Level UCAS Points Comparison
T-Level UCAS points align closely with A-Level equivalents on the tariff scale. The table below compares T-Level grades against approximate three-subject A-Level grade combinations at the same points value.
| T-Level Grade | T-Level Points | A-Level Grades | A-Level Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distinction* | 168 | A*A*A* | 168+ |
| Distinction | 144 | A*AA | 144 |
| Merit | 120 | ABB | 120 |
| Pass | 96 | CCC | 96 |
T-Levels can be a strong pathway to university, especially for students pursuing technical or vocational careers. Because a T-Level carries the UCAS equivalent of three A-Levels in a single qualification, students who achieve a Distinction or Distinction* are well-positioned to meet the entry requirements for a wide range of undergraduate programmes. Which Universities Accept T-Levels?
The majority of UK universities now accept T-Levels for entry onto relevant undergraduate programmes, and the number continues to grow each application cycle. Since UCAS included T-Levels in the tariff from 2023 entry, universities have progressively published explicit T-Level entry criteria for their courses.
Russell Group universities including UCL, the University of Manchester, and the University of Birmingham have confirmed acceptance of T-Levels for entry onto some courses, particularly in technical, science, and health-related disciplines. However, acceptance policies vary significantly between institutions and between individual courses at the same institution.
Students should always check the specific entry requirements for each individual course directly on UCAS or the university's own admissions website before applying. Some highly competitive programmes may still require traditional A-Levels alongside or instead of a T-Level, particularly where specific prior knowledge in subjects like Mathematics or Chemistry is considered essential.
