Moroccan Grade Calculator
Calculate your weighted average using Morocco's 0–20 grading system. Higher is better—20 is outstanding (virtually impossible), 10 is the minimum pass. ECTS credit-weighted as used by Mohammed V, Hassan II, and other Moroccan universities following the LMD framework.
Morocco uses a 0 to 20 numeric grading scale, where higher numbers are better. The system is deeply rooted in the French 20-point scale and follows the LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorat) framework, standardized across most public institutions.
- Pass mark: 10.00 out of 20.00. This is the minimum weighted average required to validate a module or semester.
- Perfect scores are virtually impossible: A 20/20 is practically impossible. Professors rarely give above 17-18. Anything above 16 is considered exceptional.
- Decimal precision: Grades are usually given to two decimal places (e.g., 12.00, 14.50). No standard rounding to whole numbers.
- Credits: Crédits (directly equivalent to ECTS). 30 credits per semester (60 per year).
- Assessment Structure: Evaluation is a mix of Contrôle Continu (Continuous Assessment - 30-40%) and Examens Terminaux (Final Exams - 60-70%).
- Resits: Session de Rattrapage (second session for failed modules). Usually the higher of the two marks is retained.
- Compensation: Students can pass a semester if the overall average is ≥ 10, even if a specific module is slightly below (usually with a 7/20 or 8/20 floor).
Morocco uses a weighted arithmetic mean, where each subject's Coefficient determines its impact on the final average.
- Individual Subject Grade: Calculated using Continuous Assessment (CC) and Final Exam. Typically: CC (30-40%) + Final Exam (60-70%).
- Semester Average (Moyenne du Semestre): The semester result is the average of all modules, weighted by their respective coefficients.
- Module Validation: A module is "Validated" if the grade is ≥ 10/20. Once validated, it is permanently earned (Capitalisation).
- Compensation: A student can validate a semester or an entire year if the overall average is ≥ 10.00, provided no individual module falls below the Note Éliminatoire (usually 7/20).
- Resits (Rattrapages): If a student fails to validate a module in the first session, they sit for the resit. The higher of the two marks is usually retained.
Formula:
Note: Credits (Crédits) represent workload and are awarded upon validation, but Coefficients determine the weight in the average calculation.
| Mark / 20 | French Mention | English Equivalent | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16.0 – 20.0 | Très Bien | Very Good / Excellent | Pass |
| 14.0 – 15.9 | Bien | Good | Pass |
| 12.0 – 13.9 | Assez Bien | Fairly Good | Pass |
| 10.0 – 11.9 | Passable | Satisfactory / Pass | Pass |
| 0.0 – 9.9 | Insuffisant (Échec) | Fail | Fail |
Note: The Mention (qualitative honor) is assigned based on the weighted average and appears on transcripts and diplomas.
| Morocco Mark (/20) | US Letter Grade | US Grade Point (4.0) |
|---|---|---|
| 16.0 – 20.0 | A | 4.0 |
| 14.0 – 15.9 | B+ | 3.3 – 3.7 |
| 12.0 – 13.9 | B | 3.0 |
| 10.0 – 11.9 | C | 2.0 |
| Below 10.0 | F | 0.0 |
Note: These conversions are typically used by US/UK evaluators like WES or Scholaro. Moroccan grades are often adjusted upward by evaluators due to strict marking. Generally, 12/20 converts to approximately 3.0 US GPA (B), 14/20 is seen as A-/B+, and 16/20+ is typically evaluated as 4.0 (A).
| Module | Coefficient | Grade (/20) | Weighted Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Droit Civil | 3 | 11.50 | 34.50 |
| Droit Pénal | 3 | 08.50 | 25.50 |
| Relations Internationales | 2 | 14.00 | 28.00 |
| Langues (Anglais) | 2 | 16.00 | 32.00 |
| TOTAL | 10 | 120.00 | |
Semester Average = 120.00 ÷ 10 = 12.00 / 20
Outcome: Assez Bien (Passed via compensation, despite the 8.5 in Droit Pénal).
- Moyenne Semestrielle: The average used to determine if a student passes half the year.
- Moyenne Annuelle: The average of the two semesters; if ≥ 10, the student moves to the next year.
- Moyenne de la Licence: The cumulative average of all 6 semesters.
- Attestation de Réussite: A provisional document issued immediately upon passing, prior to the printing of the official diploma.
- Module: A basic unit of teaching that can consist of one or more "Éléments de Module."
- Capitalisation: Once a module is validated (≥10/20), it is permanently earned.
- Note Éliminatoire: A mark (usually below 7/20) that prevents you from passing a semester even if your overall average is above 10.
The Moroccan system is standardized across most public institutions, but unique variations exist in private or American-style universities.

| Moroccan Average (/20) | UK Classification | US GPA Range |
|---|---|---|
| 16+ | First Class (1st) | A (3.7-4.0) |
| 14 – 15.9 | Upper Second (2:1) | B+ (3.3-3.7) |
| 12 – 13.9 | Lower Second (2:2) | B (3.0-3.3) |
| 10 – 11.9 | Third Class (3rd) | C (2.0-2.9) |
| Below 10 | Fail | F (0.0-1.9) |
Note: A Moroccan average of 14/20 (Bien) is typically equivalent to a 2:1 (Upper Second). An above-16 is a First Class. Because Moroccan grading is strict, a 13/20 is often recalculated as a B+ (3.3 GPA). Morocco uses the ECTS credit system. A 180-credit Licence is recognized as a 3-year Bachelor's across Europe.
